module directly to the left of radio 2002

what is the module directly to the left of the radio in a 2002 ranger? I replaced the cluster from a truck of the same year, and when i got it all back together i had an audible beep from the module. like i said it is just to the left of the factory radio. it has 2 plugs going into it, and if i unplug the front plug, the beep stops.

btw, this is an awesome forum. i have spent a lot of time searching, but this is a difficult thing to search for:(

It's a UN surveillance box! Destroy it!

No, seriously, it's called the GEM which stands for "Generic Electronic Module". It handles all sorts of functions like wiper delay, automatic window roll-down, etc.

Ok. I am still kinda stumped as to why it is beeping now. The only thing thats different is the check engine light works now. the bulb was blown out on the old cluster for a couple of years.

oh yeah... the truck has had a problem with the seat belt tensioners since new that ford could never make right(or wouldn't). The airbag light has been on for years so when i swapped the cluster i removed the bulb. I guess the problem has been solved. Thanks a bunch!

Now I get to pull the cluster again

Well, since the airbag module is under the console (cup holders) and not ANYWHERE near the location he described, I must have assumed wrong, huh? Sorry for being an ignorant moron...you can return to your throne, now.

Much less, for someone who considers themself an ASE certified tech to tell a person to "just unplug your airbags, you don't need them" is pretty retarded.

sorry mods for being so harsh but i feal i am justified here
none of the nonsense you speak is justifiable. since you are "ASE" certified, i guess you know that it is against the law to disconnect the airbags or even recommend it... i really think you need to get your head out of your *** dude... ase means nothing in the real world... one day you will get a reality check... maybe you already have but you are just too arrogant to realize it...

It was the module to the left of the radio beeping, not the airbag module. When I unplugged it the beeping stopped, but so did my windshield wipers. Needless to say I need wipers down here in Florida so I plugged it back in.
I haven't pulled the cluster back out to replace the airbag light yet, but I will tomorrow.

was it beepimg when the other cluster was installed?
no, it started as soon as I swapped the cluster. the only variable was that I removed the airbag light from the new cluster because it stays on constantly, and on the old cluster the check engine light was burned out and it works on the new one.

There should be a 5x5 beep that sounds when the airbag light is sensed by voltage level to be inoperative. Although the RCM does the sensing, I'm reasonably sure that the RCM sends a command to the GEM tone driver for it to generate the beep pattern.

When you get the Restraints indicator bulb fixed, post the flash code pattern and we should be able to provide some info on what needs to be done to repair the Restraints System.
