Fuel Problems

I have a 1992 Ranger 4cyl, I just bought it as a project car. It had been sitting for a couple years on blocks. It was just too nice a truck to be sitting around.

I drained all the fluids including the fuel and put on a new fuel filter. I can get the truck to start with starter fluid, but won't run.

I'm thinking it needs to be primed somehow to get the gas upto the throttle body. I've turned the key on and off several times to "charge" the fuel line, but still nothing.

Since it will start if I spray starter fluid into the aire intake, I'm thinking the injectors and thottle are OK, and it's a matter of getting the gass from the fuel tank to the motor.

Any ideas where I should start looking? any easy diag tips?

When you turn the ignition on you should hear the fuel pump running. It's in the bottom of the tank.. and you ought to hear a buzz. If you don't hear that. Then check the fuse and the relay.

If you do hear it running then it's an obstuction in the fuel line or possibly the fuel pressure regulator.

Thanks for the reply

I hear the fuel pump run a few seconds, so I'm thinking it's OK.

How do you check the pressure or see fuel at the manifold? Or Is there a trick to bleeding the air out of the fuel line?

I smell no gas

Hum... yes there should be a little valve right on the fuel rail. It looks just like a bicycle air valve. Just unscrew the cap and push in the needle. Some gas ought to come out if its getting that far.

Thanks, I'll give that a try tonight. That should purge the air out too I would think.
