L1224R LED modded '06+ tails!!! (56k no, 28 pics...)
Hey.
FINALLY showing off my led conversion 06+ tails!! Jp7, a member here, used these lamps and he showed them off...so.....i bought a pair from him to try out just for the hell of it. I was after better lighting, my whole back end to be led, the just plain badass factor, and keeping it all stock looking. What's the judgement? GREAT SUCCESS!! ~says Borat.
L1224R led's are made by Osram Sylvania and were introduced in '04 and first used on the '06 Mercurt Mountaineer. They are the first automotive LED to be made 'screw-in' as a standardized form to make just the lamp replaceable instead of the entire housing needing to be replaced. Thus making them cheaper to produce, cheaper for the auto manufacturer to 'tweak'/update lenses with respect to how light is reflected, and cheaper to maintain than the 'dot' led tails that some manufacturers are putting on vehicles these days.

These ones i used came off of a Mountaineer, purchased from Ranger-Forums member Jp7. *I give Positive feedback towards Jp7...fast shipper, he's there to help if you need it. AAA+++. PLUS.....i'm pretty dang sure i couldn't just go to a junkyard locally and pick up two mountaineer housings and cut 'em up for how cheap i got these...

After having these installed, it's an incredible difference in the "BAM!" factor and the pimp factor. They are brighter and way more vivid than the stock 3157's. The color is more red when compared to the old incandescent 3157's. The speed in which it takes for these to be in fill intensity is VERY VERY fast compared to regular old filament bulbs, as you can see in a video found below....way below. lol. Time to 'rise': 250 milliseconds for incandescent bulbs......1.8 milliseconds for an LED. 138.8 times FASTER than incandescent. WOW! I have yet to find out how to cure the 'hyperflash' when signaling yet...but that's soon to come. Maybe jp7 has some links for me. Still need to put on the led clearence lamp between the bumper/gate, led lisence plate lights, and led headache rack lights.

Oh yes...the working mess on the bed. lol. WAS going to tint the tails while doing this mod...but no where locally had nightshade...so...it'll wait.
Here's one issue i had at first...but was easily cured. This is what the bulb 'rotates'/'screws' into....notice how it's 'domed'. If i were to just JB weld the 'dome' as-is, the L1224R's would not have used the stock reflector very well at all....no 'bounce'.....
There's enough of a flat surface on these pieces that the 'domed' part of it was easily removed....by use of a bench grinder!
STOCK 3157 plug hole on back of '06+ tails...
NOTICE: Hole size difference for the bulb holder inner....L1224R is slightly smaller of a hole than the 3157 hole....so....no destroying your brand new tails!! (mostly)
I wanted the L1224R's to be completely centered in the old 3157 holes...that way there's even light being projected off the reflector. Get your bulb holders lined up, and tape 'em down. Keep in mind....where you have this piece at, MUST work in relation to the plugs on the back of the new lighting equipment. More on that later. You'll notice in this pic, that you can get it EFFIN PERFECT!....hard to describe sorta...but the notches work in sync with eachother...no trimming of housing needed.
So you got 'em taped down, I made an alignment mark, and traced around the piece so that I know where it's sitting so i have no extra ugly epoxy showing. Make sure you can 'act' as though your installing your lamps...so that you have no "IT WONT FIT" issues...

Bulb holder on housing...aligned with your alignment marks.
Let the JBweld cure over night...Then go around the new screw-in hole pieces with something like silocone or plastic epoxy, then install the L1224R's.
Cut old 3157 plug off, crimp/solder new pigtail for L1224R's to the stock wiring. You did figure out what wire does what right? I used those heat shrink butt connectors for temperary use until i get some good bullets or male/female connectors...i'll worry about that later. Make sure everything works. DONE!
While i was at it....figured it was time to chage them backup bulbs. I was running those 55w 3156's....now running 3157's Xenon(hyper white) 'chrome-domes' from Autolumination.com that I had just lying around. SICKK!! looking in the housing.

Kinda hard to tell...still getting used to playing around with the new camera at night...truck on left = stock(trepaul86). truck on right = L1224R and LED third replacement bulb(me!). Notice the shade of red you see....
OH YEA! Pictured above is the installed V-Leds.com's AWESOME 5w 14 M-SMT 906 replacement....and it looks GREAT!!! in my Super Duty third brake light...

I am VERY VERY satisfied with the new rear mod. Like I said...I still need to research how to fix the 'hyperflash' issue. I was going after a stock-like LED conversion for the rear, WITHOUT seeing all those 'dots' from normal LED third or tails. And the verdict is:
Oh....Party up front...AND now party up rear? What kind of hair cut is that!??
Way too late update:
Replaced the stock blue incadescent flasher with a flasher purchased at Autozone for about $12. It's an EP27 that says LED on the flasher, but not the packaging. works great! Cured the 'hyperflash' issues when the turnsignal is selected. Problem was cured about a week after the LED install was done.
Went to 3 different auto parts stores to find one that would work. The one from Schucks flashed FASTER than the stock flasher. lol.
Vid comes later.
Oh....and to anyone talking about the 3rd bulb on '06+ tails....yea.....I'm going to do it again. Damnit Trevor for driving by my house the other day after his full blown LED conversion on all his lighting. lol.

hyperflash is easy to take care of..... just buy the flasher v-leds.com sells - it is like 16$ i think - mine flash just like stock after installing the electronic flasher..
great thread Shane - i couldn't have done it better...
(by the way, the flasher is plug and play - it takes 5 minutes to install - the stock one is blue, and is under the dash near the steering wheel.)

I read somewhere that newer rangers have 5 pins...I've never actually noticed a normal old flasher under there before.

Offical product line the L1224R's are part of is the ' Joule ' system. SHOOT....just found out Ford first used this lamp in the Mustang GT-R concept...6 of these bad boys in the back!! Then made it standard equipment on the '06 Mountaineer refresh to all clear housings. Now it also appears on the '08 Taurus X and the Mercury Sable. I swear...i'm learning alot tonight. lol. Searching for amber ones as i type...

Yeah, I did it awhile back.. took me all of about 30mins... Step drill, connectors, test light and some electrical tape to ensure the bulb stays in there... Like a strap if you will..
I'm runnin 906 in the lower light holes, not the 194's, that's why they're so bright. Gotta admit, it's sweet! Shane says he won't do it again, but he will lol. I've had people ask if they're like emergency vehicle lights cuz they trade off when lit up lol... It's great!

I wanted to be able to still take the bulb out if it burns out and replace it, so I didn't seal it. I used the ends off the gauges I used for my pressure gauge... Yoinked 2 of them from the surplus place for that mod specifically. Cut the hole with a step drill just big enough to push the light into and have it snap into place. Electrical tape is just to make sure it stays in there. Not meant to actually hold it in there lol...
Mine are wired like this. one wire to the park lamps, the other to the turn signal. So they take turns flashing, which is pretty cool lol.. I can get a vid up if people want.
Jp7, they make those for the front in hyper white?!
