98 4cyl 2wd auto Blowing overdrive fuses

Well I tried the search and no help.
I have to pick up a friends Ranger and drive it a couple of hundred miles.
I just heard that it's been blowing the overdrive fuse.
Not sure if it's blowing when the truck is turned on or when the shifter is first used. It's a colum shifter. 98 4cylinder Automatic

1st question:
If the fuse is blown, will it go into overdrive?
or will it keep it from going into overdrive?

2nd question:
Any good common ideas of where I should look for the cause?

Thanks

Not sure but I think you're talking about the overdrive cancel switch (aka, the Transmission Control Switch) on the end of the shift lever. If so, then there is a fairly common problem with higher odometer automatics. The wires from the TCS travel inside the shifter stalk and then make a right angle turn to go down the top of the column. Sometimes the repeated action of moving the shifter will either chafe through the insulation or break one of the conductors. You can remove the plastic column trim to inspect the wires.

The transmission defaults to "overdrive allowed" every time the ignition is turned on. Once the fuse has blown, it can no longer turn the overdrive off. So you should have use of all the gears for your trip.

Thanks a lot. That is the exact answer that I needed.
If that wire is shorting out, I'll either disconnect it or fix it.
I doubt anybody would bother using it.
Thanks for the reply.
