Brake light switch

Brake light switch
I have a 1999 Ford Ranger 3.0 supercab and the brake lights doesn't come on unless I push the brake pedal all the way to the floor. The cruise control will turn off when I just tab the brake pedal. can someone post a pict of what it looks like so I can see if something is broke. Thank you in advance.

Hi I know this is an old post but did you solve the problem? I have a similar problem. When I start my 98 Ranger the brake lights come on when I barely touch the pedal. After some driving and braking the brake lights don't come on until the pedal is fully depressed. This happens every morning. I'm wondering if it is the switch or the brake booster? Thanks

Simple drawing here: http://repairguide.autozone.com/znet...5280089ca3.gif
Its a plunger type switch, when brake pedal is up all the way plunger is pushed in and disconnects wires, when you press down on brake pedal plunger can move out and reconnect wires, passing 12v to brake light wire
The switch is actually 2 switches in one box, for brake lights, and a sensor switch to turn off cruise and also activate shift interlock, and 4WD low range
Also there are 3 brakes lights, 2 at the back of the truck and one on the top back of the cab, often called 3rd brake light
The cab brake light is wired directly to the brake switch
The 2 rear brake lights are activated by the switch but..............their 12v power runs thru the Multi-function switch(turn signal switch)
So if cab brake light works but rear brake lights don't then problem is the multi-function switch not the brake switch
The brake system itself, master and booster doesn't have anything to do with brake light bulbs, there is a sensor on the master that will turn on the Dash board "Brake" light and/or ABS light when brake fluid is low
But.....................if a wire is being moved by the brake pedal arm then it may be causing your problem, have a look to see if any wires are moving as brake pedal is pushed down

I will check to see if any wires are moving when the pedal is pushed. When I first found out the lights weren't working by a friendly police officer, I started checking for power at the switch and ground. All was good at the switch. Cleaned the battery to frame ground and they worked. That was a week ago. Just noticed the current situation about lights good when I just start and then not working properly after driving awhile. My switch is not the plunger type in the drawing. Guess I'll throw a new switch in to eliminate one possibility. Thanks
