Where are you guys mounting the temp sensor for the OHC mod?

I'm trying to plan mine out.. Where is a good place to mount the sensor?

Where are you guys mounting the temp sensor for the OHC mod?

In the hole that is already there for the Explorer's. John and I mounted mine on the drivers side right below the headlight. If you pulled the sensor from a junkyard and you snagged the little yellowish-white 'christmas tree' plug thing that attaches to the sensor itself -- your golden. If not, just...zip-tie that thing on there or something.

Hmm...well Sip-Tie's always work though. You can just go around the sensor and through the hole in the frame and it will be in near the same spot, ya dig?

No, Adam, I didn't have the little mounting thingie (I like your description though). How are you doing! I've been mad at you but I'm getting over it since I'm asking how you are, lol!

Just like Adam said, mount it somewhere it won't see engine heat. Mine is under the bumper -- but my bumper is white and doesn't absorb heat.

So pretty much anywhere in front of the radiator will do?

Not in front of it -- to the side of it. The radiator can still radiate heat into it. It should be to the left or right of the radiator bulkhead.

So.. maybe behind the driver's side headlight?

edit: I guess that'll get warm at night too. Probably somewhere behind the valance looks best.

Yes, up under the bumper so it doesn't get splashed too much or evaporative cooling gives you artificially low readings on wet days.

There is no PERFECT location. Just pick one and "interpret" what you see based on the location.

mine is behind the headlight and it works okay... although i do get some strange readings sometimes

Wouldn't it just make sense to put it in the exact location as it is on the Explorer?

I've got a console, but no harness. Or temp sensor. :(

So you think Ford found the best position? I was unhappy with some engine heat that gets into it in that position at idle. I moved it down and out at the expense of "splashing" as a compromise. EVERY place you put it is a compromise -- just select yours! :)

You knucklehead! You had me do all that work on your truck and you sold it two weeks later and you never told me you were selling it. OTHER PEOPLE told me you knew you were selling it and they knew before you ever had me do the work.

I would not have done all that if I'd know you were just going to sell it. I don't mind doing installs for people who are going to enjoy the results. But that was insulting to me, Adam. You did get a lot of stuff from the JY's for me and there's no question that you "paid" for the install in those terms.

But on a PERSONAL level, I felt a bit "used". Sorry, but that's just how I felt. You may not have inteneded to deceive me, I don't know. But I wish you had come to me and said, "Look, John, I've decided it's silly to put this thing in storage and I'm going to sell it, but I want to put this thing in anyway. Would you humor me on this?"

With a personal appeal, I may have still done it. But it sure feels like you didn't tell me so that you could get it done anyway and didn't give me a chance to consider it.

Whatever, maybe I'm just being sensitive, but that fact that OTHERS knew you were selling it before the install, and that I did not -- well, no other way to put it but it hurt my feelings and I felt "manipulated".

However, even as I'm writing this, I'm not feeling the hurt and anger I did -- so I guess I'm getting over it. I like you too much for it to last, anyway.

Guess you can tell I've been in therapy before, eh?

Poor little Johnny, thats no way to use him Adam. U could of told him after he did the work and than drove off into the wind!!! LOL, just messing!!! I can see where your coming from John.

Anyway another OHC question for u John. My temp. readout seems to get stuck every now and than. Last month or so it got suck at 57. I had it mounted to the driver side radiotor bulk head. It seemed to get alot of engine heat there. So I said I wanted a better reading while driving I could live with the incase in temp at idle, which I don't see much anyway. So I mounted it in front of the radiator and tied it to the grill. Seems to work great there. While, this weekend it got stuck at 27. Now I'm not sure if it really got down to 27 maybe but I know that afternoon on my way home it was warmer than 27 but the temp. readout stayed at 27. Next day when I drove the truck it seemed to work fine.

Also when I move the sensor to the grill I ohm'ed it out and I was getting a change in resisties as I put my hand over it so I assumed the sensor was working. Is it more likely a sensor or readout problem??

right now, I have mine by the airbox in the fender wall. I found that I can just screw w/ the threads into an exisisting hole. I still have problems reading from 5-20 degree's above normal. haven't had time tho to go out and move it around more to see if anything changes.

I remember someone sayin that the whole entire sensor is reading the temperature. is that true?

(not sure if it matters, but I have the sensor w/ the point on it)

If it's getting stuck, you either have not connection to the VSS, or the connection is faulty. Add the VSS connection, or fix you current one, and it won't stick anymore unless you're PARKED.

At higher temperature variations particularly, the unit will not update unless the truck is moving to minimize heat soak affecting the readings. The result if you have no VSS connection is a seemingly "stuck" reading.

I have the VSS connected, but maybe it isn't tight. I'll check it.

is there any down side to making sure that while driving that it will get a direct flow of air?

It's kind of like in intake system: you want OUTSIDE air, and no air from the engine compartment.

The only downside is when the sensor gets wet. Evaporative cooling can make the temperature look lower than it is.

Also, tape or seal the splices so that water can't get into them if you live in an area where they salt the roads in the winter. The salt water that results make enough of a short between the wires sometimes that it makes the readings look higher than the actual temperature.

They don't salt the roads down here, but I live less than a mile from the ocean, plenty of salt in my air.
