Front Rotor Backing Plate?

The backing plate on my front driver's side rotor has rusted, separated and is now rubbing on the inside of my rim. What does this plate do? Just keep debris, water, mud and the like away from the brake assembly? I am tempted to just remove it. Do I need to replace it?

Thanks.

Yes, it is a splash guard. I recommend that you get it replaced.

Can I buy one online or do I have to go to the dealer?

Eh, its not 100% needed, my ranger got mangled when i was working on something and ripped it off....

some cars dont even cover but 20% of the rotor...

So in my opinion... You should replace it eventually, your truck wont fall apart without it... rip that S.O.B. off...
