Engine Cuts Out at 3K ?

2006 3.0 automatic. I can floor it in park and it starts cutting out at 3000 rpm and will not rev any higher. Any ideas ?

no. it's so people don't blow their trucks up with them in park/neutral. once in gear, it will go to where the normal red line is. why would you need to rev it that high without moving anyways?

My son has a 2002 Dodge Intrepid. Yesterday I was out checking out his car, like a father does making sure all is good. I had it in park and stepped on the gas and the same thing happened. I drove the car and didn't go over 70 mph and the car ran fine. I wonder if it may be the same thing.

Yeah, I'm trying to go back in time. No, I get no thrill out of revving this 3.0, in my youth the LT1 in my Z28, the 396 RS/SS and even my 72 390 Ranger were a different story though. Obviously if I liked to rev this one, I would have known the thing wouldn't go past 3K in park before I put 130,000 on it.

Let me start from the begining. Got gas and pulled away from the pump. The motor started cutting out while I was pulling out of the lot onto a 60 mile per hour two lane highway. Thought the transmission was slipping at first, but when I pulled over, put it in park and revved it, it cut out the same as it was when trying to enter road in drive. So yes, it does this in both park and drive.

Search leads me to think it's the camshaft syncronizer ?

Went out and it's fine, maybe as you said, shifter wasn't seated properly. Funny, I'm on my third little Ranger since 93 640,000 miles between em and never new about the rev limiter.

i drive an 06 as well. probably the same issue, but driven it for 15k miles and had it happen once, maybe twice. just tried putting it in drive again and worked fine. kind of a weird scarce issue but i know what you mean as its happened to me.

I drove a Ford 500 that had the same feature. It was a rental. It was slick and i wanted to give it some hell. I think even when it was burning out it wouldn't go above 3k until it got traction.

At first I thought this was going down the road and gunning it. If this was the case it would most likely be spark plug gap, for those that ended up here from the friendly search button,
