Oil Leak - gotta pull the engine?

Hey guys
I'm hoping you have some experience with this. Looks like I have an oil leak from the rear main seal or back end of the Pan. I've a 4.0/auto trans 4X4 in a 2002 extended cab (FX4). The dealer tells me that the engine must come out to fix it. They say that if I pull the trans I still can't pull the pan.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance
Jeff

I had the same problem with mine a few months back. I was "lucky" and while my mechanic was in there fixing a coolant leak in the timing chain cover gasket, he hit up the oil pan gasket with some RTV sealant and pushed it back in. My oil pan gasket was being pushed out though, I don't know if that's your problem as well. You might be able to pull out the front axle to change the pan gasket, but it's easier if you just pull the engine.

How severe is the leak? If its not too bad, I'd try Auto Rx. It fixed my weeping oil pan gasket.

we had a couple of guys that i work with change oil pan gaskets on a ranger before and they spent so much time trying to get the oil pan that it would of been quicker to pull the motor out.

I know it's a hacks way, but I couldn't afford another $1000 to fix it right then. It will be done right, I just needed to buy some more time. Never said it was a permanent fix either.

The rear main main seal is right up there with the 3.0L coolant leak. My 3.0 has a slight coolant leak, been over a year now. I'll be selling it before fixing it. It leaks behind the timing chain cover.

The oil leak is a bit more serious though. But as mentioned above...the engine needs to be pulled. Welcome to having a Ranger......lol

I had just under 80,000 when mine went. I think the two previous owners did quite a number on the truck before I got it. Done a lot of bizarre stuff to it in the past two years.
