flywheel free when parked??

flywheel free when parked??

This is a 96 4.0 auto.. I was driving down the highway and bang! eng still running no trans?? took starter out and ck'd flywheel and I can turn it by hand ? What gives??

Maybe the flexplate bolts broke.

When you were turning the flexplate was the torque converter turning with it? If not then something broke, maybe the bolts.

Saw this on a Chevy some years ago.The flex plate broke around where it bolts to the crank . The bolts were intact along with a section of the flex plate.
However in his case he could still drive the truck somewhat and it made a loud rattling noise.

Just the flywheel turns, sounds like the bolts or plate broke
