The plug in will work but usually look like crap. The light is uneven and hot spots at all the bulbs.

Is there an LED plug-in bulb that will work for this application ?

And give uniform light? Not that I have seen. Some plug ins are a lil better than other but non are as good as custom fitting the leds.

My cluster is still stock. But to get the red to show through you have to take the gauges apart and sand down the faces to get the green off. I know n3elz did his cluster in red and did a write up on how he did it. If you search under his user name a link to his cardomain.com account should come up. Give me a few mins and I will see if I can find it.

Edit:
Here are two diffrent ways to do your gauge cluster

Thanks, I have read about it.

I will have to get with it and do it.

Now if the Dash is re-colored to RED will RED LEDs be required ?

If you paint the overlays then no. If you just sand the green off then yes.

The hot spots are created by the layout of the gauges. Ford uses layers of paint to dim them down.

If you mark where the extra paint is and use the same technique they dint then you will get closer to the stock look in a new color.

I did mine in blue and at first i only sanded and repainted the gauge faces. the final product looks much better if you convert to led (6 led's per bulb you replace) along with painting the faces. good luck
