Fuel filler hose replacement

Well, I'm finally getting around to replacing the fuel filler hose. Quick question. The original hose has a splash shield inserted at the tank end of the hose. Have you guys been transferring this to the replacement part or just clamping the new piece w/o the splash shield. My gut feeling says this will help the new piece last a little longer.

UPDATE

Finished with the install using splash shield from from original FoMoCo piece. With the shield in place you can't rock the hose end to help seat it over the nipple on the gas tank. But by carefully centering the shield in the hose and a light spray of silicone, the hose will pop on with a little rotation. Use the hose clamp above the splash shield to prevent it from being forced to deeply into the replacement hose. Once the hose is seated properly, move the clamp to the proper position. I left the clamp loose and lowered the bed. Bolted the filler neck to the bed allowing the loose tank end to rotate into a neutral position on the tank nipple. Carefully onbolted the filler neck from the bed, raised the bed and tightened the clamp at the tank, being careful not to disturb the alignment. Lowered the bed, attached the filler neck to the bed, bolted down the bed and reconnected the taillight wiring harness.

Filled the tank. Not a drop of gas on the ground and no problems with early shutoff on the pump. Drove home with the slider open. No fumes. I'm calling this one a success.
