Fan Clutch AND Electric fan??

So I was reading some tips on how to increase my fuel mileage, and liked idea of adding an electric fan. So I check to see if my truck uses a fan clutch/driven fan or electric..and to my surprise it uses both..WTF??

So is the electric fan just for the AC or does it activate off engine temp?

I'm getting around 24-25mpg mixed..but I'd like to do better.

Sounds like the electric is for the A/C and the clutched fan off of the water pump is for the cooling system.

If you really want to get better mileage, ditch the entire a/c system. Yeah, sure, it can get a little warm, but you would see a 35 or so pound loss and a reduction of drag on the engine, as well as better gas mileage resulting from both of the above.

Or be sissy-footed on the gas pedal. That truly is the only way to increase the gas mileage... most of the problem is the driver. Given what you said you've been getting, either your engine needs a tune up or you are a lead footed gorilla trying to rip the steering wheel clean off of the column...

I get 20-24 mixed avg. in mine. And it has the 3.0 super outdated engine.

Huh, strange.

I stand corrected.

Is he saying that someone took the stock clutch fan off of its clutch, and put the electric on there?

Yes, we need pics...

Yes some Rangers had an electric fan mounted in front of the rad support. I think it was only on 2.3's with a/c in warmer areas of the country. It is original factory Ford.
