Guys what's the normal engine running temperature on a 2001 4.0 SOHC?
i'm getting an electric rad fan and i need to know what temperature for the thermoswitch i'm gonna get, thx all

 

About 180-195*F, you can change that by swapping thermostats, about $10 and 20 mins.

 

Just make sure you get a good e-fan. So far the best is from a Taurus/Sable.

My plan is to cut the upper rad hose in 2, get a vw rabbit thermo switch (or a 2 speed thermo switch from a newer vw) fit it in the hose some how and wire a relay for the fan, and mount a smaller fan in front on the a/c condenser (sp?) for the a/c only with its own relay, i'll get the signal from the a/c when it kicks in to activate the relay...

we get 128deg here during the summer, it's HELL!! the fan clutchs can't take it, mine stopped working on this truck and i just bought it, and it stopped working on my old 99 3.0 too, so an electric fan is a must.

The upper rad hose, the stat housing, and the area in the rad where the upper rad hose exits are all good spots for a sensor. Mine is a push through the rad type abd is right next to the upper hose exit.

I have tweaked miine quite a bit on three completely different vehicles. And on the ranger I've settled for 60% fan speed at 215F and ramps up to 100% speed at 220F.

60% fan speed is usually enough to keep it in check. Even in the summer while towing I hardly ever see it get up over 216-217. And that only occures when I've been towing down the hwy and come to a stop for more than a minute.


I'd then suggest you have the rad unshrouded and use two of the largest fans that will fit. The fan you place on top needs to be right where the upper hose exits into the rad. That way you help pull heat off it before it migrates to the rest of the coolant/rad.

Even on my truck.. if/when the e-fan fails I'll be replacing it with two instead of just one 18" fan. IMO it's a must for heavy towing or very hot weather. Besides you'll pull more air across the AC condensor at low speeds. The only drawback to my setup is idle in heavy traffic. Not so much cooling ability. But with the underdrives my AC performance is lacking when I sit still or just crawl along for more than 2 minutes. AC compressor speed is more to blame than the fan I think.

Oh and one more thing. If you run two fans you might want to raise the neutral idle speed to 800-825 (stock should be 750)

Rich, I'm impressed that you are admitting to the problems with an e-fan / UDP setup! Just some additional information, raising the idle speed will keep
the battery from discharging.

If you measure the AC compressor head pressure, this will tell you if your poor AC performance is due to insufficient condenser cooling, or AC compressor turning too slow. If the pressure is too high, then the condenser needs more air flow across it, if the head pressure is too low (suction pressure will also be HIGH), the AC compressor is turning too slow.
