installing power seats.

Hey Everyone, I have a question or two here. It all started while I was at work I had to locate a lower control arm for a yota and a whole bunch of other things and when I had finished my list he said "Any thing else" with a sigh. I said jokingly "how about power seats and a center console for my ranger" then he said let me check. Well it turns out he has them and they match the color of my interior and they are power seats and full length console.

Now my question is, if I put power seats in a truck without power seats, how do I make the power part move?, Is it just 12v supply and ground or is there a control module under the dash ect?
And.
Will they bolt right in to the existing mounts for my seats?

The explorer is a 97 or 98 My truck is a 99.

Any insite would be great, thanks guys

Is your truck an extended cab? If so then the seats will bolt right up. I don't know if 97 is any different but 98+ Ranger extended cab will have the same bolt holes as the following explorers:

97-01 4door Explorer
97-01 2door Explorer

02+ 2door Explorer Sport
02+ Sport Trac

02+ 4doors use a very different seat rails and will not work. That's the year they made the interior a bit bigger and flashy from the Ranger.

To power Up my seats I ran 12 gauge wire from the electric motor and ran it into my engine bay where there is the fuse holder and power sources. I used an inline standard 20amp mini fuse and connected it into the engine bay's fuse box that is right next to the brake booster/ master cylinder on the driver's side firewall and fender. I then just grounded the seat motor to the chassis underneath the carpet.

thanks

I have a ton of things wired up in my truck, Im pretty good with wiring, You answer my question perfectly. I just needed to know if all they needed was a 12v supply instead of a control module under the dash that had to be wired in.

Im gunna take them power out of my switch panel(all fused) and run to the seats.

I am about to do this mod. can you give more insight to how to connect the wire to the wire to the fuse box, and do you think 14 guage wire would work? the wiring harness looks like 14ga to me. Thanks

Honestly i just finished this mod... I ran 12 Gauge wire all the way back and split it to 2 14 Gauge wires right after the fire wall. I wired in a 30 Amp fuse in the 12 Gauge line right next to the battery. Then i grounded the wires to the motors using the bolt from the seat and put the bolt through the ground wire terminal. Anythin else you need help with? like i said i just finished this like 2 weeks ago!

man, i would love pics of under your seat and the splice to the two 14 ga wires. i know that aint gonna happen unless you took some when you installed them. so did you trash the connector that was originally on the seats and went straight to the motors, or did you splice it into the connector? my power seats only have two wires running to them through the connector.

one other thing too... the sealtbelt retensioner wires on the driver side of my my old seats had 4 wires (unlike the passenger side which had 2). i am assuming one set is for the retensioners and one set is for the seatbelt minder. were your retensioners the same, or did you keep your old ones? I think i am gonna have to get new retensioners because mine are bad due to an airbag deployment. i was hoping i could use the ones from the new seats. any thoughts on this?

anyone know where i can get them? i would prefer to get used ones from a non-wrecked truck if possible (is this a good idea?). if i have to go to dealer how much am i looking at?

I can go out today and take some pictures. I left enough slack and that will give me an excuse to tighten it! and i just used the stock connector and put new wires into that. My seats had the same exact thing with the 2 wires runing from the connector.

And a question for you is what year is your truck? because my 1997 seats had a different seat belt design then my 2003 truck. So i had to use my old seatbelts. So i would suggest doing that and i am not really sure where you would buy those retensioners from. You might have to go to the dealer. or better yet look around at the junkyard for a ranger that didn't have the air bag deployed!

but like i said ill try to get some pictures sometime today probably in the next few hours!

alright i got some pictures of my wiring...

Okay the fuse is a 30A fuse running on 12gauge wire that i split down to 2 seperate power wires to the seats (each 16Gauge)

This is how i split the wires, The opening i used was the slot for the hood release cord.

This is the slot where i had my seat belt plugged back in.

Hope this is what you were lookin for! The bigger wire on the harness was i think 12 gauge and thats what i used to ground the seats.

well, i just got done putting them in...sort of. i checked the power seats and everything works, but the mounting brackets are not exact matches (almost but not quite). im gonna have to pick up a dremel with a cutting wheel to get them to go. on both sides there is one bolt that is just a bit off. i drilled them out, but it doesnt give any clearance to position the bolt. It sucks too because i did the explorer center console mod so i am gonna be riding to work tonight in my old passenger seat. thanks for your help paintballer.

also, does anyone know anything about seatbelt pretensioners? the connectors for these seats do not match up with what came with my truck. I have to replace my old pretensioners anyway, but i was hoping i could use the ones that came with these seats but i don think it can work because the driver side pretensioner from my old seats had 4 wires running to them and the new seats only have 2....\

Edit: nevermind on the question about pretensioners for expo seats...they dont have them. anyone know the price from a dealer for pretensioners for a 01 XLT ranger? im gonna try and see if i can find a cash for clunkers truck, but im not holding my breath. also, anyone by chance know which year(s) ranger share the same pretensioneras my 01?
