Gas guage acting weird

Well ill start off from in the morning first start up..Before I put the key in my gas guage is inbetween 1/4 to empty just sitting there..I turn the key and it jumps up a bit and then goes to empty and stays there...Its a 95 ranger extend splash manual tranny with 6 cylinder..the small one i think the 3.2...I have tryed to put half a tank in it and it does the same thing...One time when it started acting up the guage would just float up to like 1/2 to 3/4 of a tank altho i know there was not much in it and and took a thirty mile drive it woul;d float back to correct amount..after that it worked right for a while now its doin as i stated in the beginning..Just giving some background..Any help is much appreciated..thanks..

I been threw 3 sending units. My guage still does not work. Ford sucks with them as mentioned. Mine reads fine til 1/2 tank than just stops. Plus my odometer does not work. So, talk about getting scared on long trips.

I think all ranger gas gauges are like that. My goes from a 1/4 tank to past the red empty line and then back up past a 1/4 tank. But i have noticed that it only drops down when i hop on the gas, like when on an exspessway entrance ramp.

OK here goes..I didnt take the bed off nor did I drop the tank but I cut a hole in the bed just above the pump..I can fix it back nice but also can use it if I need it in the future..Pulled the pump out and the float was gone...So stuck my hand in the tank and found the float and off to tha dealer I went..Turns out the sending unit float and all come together..So I woulda had to by the pump to get it all..407.00..So I said hell naw ill go buy some cork or something because the float was made to be taken on and off...So the guy said hold on and went and got a whole pump they just took outta something else that had the same float and he gave it too me..the float that is .No charge...So the whole job cost 5 dollaz for a six pack..Now it works fine.. But I wonder why all the parts houses sold the sending unit seperatly? It was obvious by looking at my pump that it was all made together as the ford dealer said...And the float just had a lil screw that held it on..Why just not sell the float? Other than the obvious fact of the money issue lol..So thanks for all the help..This is a pretty cool place...Thanks.
