Ebay HID discussion/upgrade?

Ebay HID discussion/upgrade?
From what I know about ebay, if its cheap, its probably junk.
Now, with that being said:
Is there any way of buying these sub-50$ HID sets and tweaking them or all together changing parts to make them last and more resilient and worthwhile?
I mean, the HID type bulb is more effective and far brighter. Id love to install a pair to free up some wattage however, at a cost of nearly 200$ for a solid set around my town I cannot justify it.
so any input? This is just a thought

ddm tuning. i have a hi/low set of 55w ballasts that i have had for nearly 3 years and no problems. there customer service is crap however. i did order 2 sets (one for my other car) and they shipped a non functional ballast. that took about 3 weeks to clear up. but again the ones on my truck have had 0 issues, and tend to be one of the most bought hid kits i can think of. i paid about 60 bucks for my hi/low kit for what its worth

$30 for a kit plus shipping is cheap!

Unless you are running projector housing I do believe it is illegal to put HIDs in a halogen housing.
Will the cop know its not an a DOT approved setup? Not sure.
The 50 dollar ebay kits are known to burn out quickly, not sure about here but many other auto forums around the net.
From what I have read this is the kit you want to be legal and upgrade the lights. However you need to split the housing apart to install it.

The ebay kits are great.....for fogs or offroad lights only. I have been running a Xentec ebay kit for a year now in my fogs but the headlight kits glare way to much. do it right and retrofit if you want the best output you can get, get in on a group buy from the retrofit source and save yourself $100.

35w kit and say a 4500k woundnt be suspect really. however my 55w with 6k(i hate 6k btw) is more that questionable. i did however get pulled over not to long ago and the cop complimented my lights. and oddly enough i only get flashed when my fogs are on too.... still makes me wonder at times.
