AC Compressor Cycling On And Off

I think the topic says it all. When I turn on the air, the copmpressor cycles for 2 seconds, off for 5, on for 2, off for 5. Needless to say, I never get cool air in the cab.

I have a 2002 Ranger XLT, 4.0 6 Cylinder.

Suggestions?

Refridgerent is low. There is probably a leak. Take the truck to a shop that does AC repairs. They'll need to find the leak, fix it, and recharge.

The only other option is to do the A/C Compressor Switch Mod - found on the How To Submissions board.

However, to properly fix this problem, you'll have to get the system charged and sealed. It should run ya under $40.

WHen I changed my A/C line (so there was no freon at all), the a/c would never turn on. I checked fuses, checked connections, checked fuses. I finally said to heck with it and turned on the freon cannister. The a/c came on intermittently as freon was going in then stayed on as it got full. It was wierd. Based on the replies, that's how they work.

You're low on refrigerant. It will cost you an hour of diagnosis anywhere you go which is somewhere between 60 & 80 an hour. Recharge and evacuate the system is 1.4 hours everywhere I've worked. If you have an evaporator leaking it's going to be very expensive to pull the dash and fix. Otherwise hope it's just a line leaking or O-ring. You can check both the low side and high side valves yourself to see if they're leaking which is very common. You can take off the plastic caps and search for any evidence of oil or put some soapy water over the valve and see if it bubbles. If that's the problem you'll still need to have it done by a pro but it will save you some cash so they don't try selling you other crap. Whoever told you to do the A/C compressor switch mod is crazy. If you force your A/C compressor on without freon or oil on it, it will only seize up and then you'll be buying a compressor and a drive belt to go with whatever is really wrong with it.
