99 ranger camshaft sensor
Hey guys looking for some help here...I ran the scanner on my truck it's 4.0 ranger and it brought up coffee P0340 I believe and it said it could be the camshaft sensor and the truck would run and die and start back up and then sometimes it wouldn't start. So I replaced the plastic cap and it won't start at all now and acts like it's out of time and wants to backfire. My question is do you have to set timing to replace this cap it looks like it would just be straight forward and remove the old one and put the new one on and you'd be done. Any ideas would help.

Did you check the synchronizer shaft for side to side wear while you had the sensor off ?
Was there any damage to the original sensor ?
What happens is that the synchronizer shaft bushing wears out and allows the mechanical part to come in contact with the sensor.
Unless the synchronizer locking bolt has come loose, then there is no timing to reset.
I'm assuming that it was running well until it threw up the P0340 code, or was it running gradually worse until the code came up ?
