I just got my Flowmaster 40 delta flow put on this week and it really does not sound as good as I was hoping. I was wondering what affect in sound would I have if I removed one or two cats? I know there are emission laws and all that, but there is not testing here. So how many could I take off, im not sure how many there are to start with. Any other suggestions for making it sound a little louder and more aggressive would be great. I have a 2002 Ranger 4.0L XLT 4X4 Off-Road.

 

Do you have O2 sensors? Removing the cats and O2 sensors will mess with engine I'm pretty sure, not just the cats, but the O2 sensors reading differently

 

you can only remove the one after your o2 sensor. whcih that will be the last cat

 

ok so thats the only one after an o2 sensor? Will this make a noticable difference in sound? Iv also read that I might lose some power by removing cats? Will there honestly be much of a difference with removing one out of 4 cats?

 

Not much difference, but whoever told you that cats are a power adder is an idiot.

Cats if anything, besides clean emissions, restrict power. It won't be a huge sound difference but you may notice it, since you already have the flowmaster

 

so other than taking the cat(s) off is there any other affordable way to make it louder and not sound ricey? I know I could get headers, but they are somewhat expensive

 

Not really, exhaust and a single cat removal is about it, besides headers. I wish there was a way to replace all the cats with a single high flow cat and still make the O2 sensors read correctly

 

You can remove the catalyst(s) and make it pass emissions without any catalyst(s) whatsoever - I passed emissions today as a matter of fact in my IX with no catalyst at all - that being said my motor is built and costs more than your truck did when it was brand new.

That being said, unless you have a built engine, it will more than likely make your performance WORSE.

If you want better sound find a muffler and modify from the catalyst back for a sound you like. Changing the exhaust from the catalyst forward requires fuel and timing recalibration to work correctly inside the ECU ROM.

 

Yea I forgot that modern engines are tuned with the cats being on. I don't plan on messing with them anyway
