Exhaust pipe fell off -- so I ditched it for this

My exhaust pipe from the muffler to the tip has been abused a bit, and it came loose. So I have decided to leave it off because it sounds better this way! Also, I didn't like how close the pipe came to the spare (which is a 31" on my truck) and how the pipe kept getting thrust up into the body coming off hills.

So, I put this crappy dump on it to just angle the exhaust down and back. Just a piece I got at the local NAPA around the corner from work. It's underneath so I don't care and yes it's got a "crimp" bend but for that distance it can't mean much with 3.0 seeing as it's a 2.5" pipe. Hard to tell from the photo but it clears everything by 4" on either side or so. Not close to anything at all.

Still sounds deeper and more "rumble" than before! I like it.

I had to cut off the old clamp. It was pretty bad even after only 2 years.

So, how can we relate this to a piece of aircraft or space ship? Is that T6061 Grade Aircraft Aluminum that that thing is made out of? I am sure you can relate it to weight-savings and less over-hang for a better departure angle, right John?

Yes, better departure angle -- and it's aluminized steel -- does that make it special? :p

Yes, it doesn't blow on it directly, and it's far enough away that radiation is not a problem -- so far, lol! We'll see. I think it's okay though with the pipe I used.

i always heard that mandrel bends were the way to go not only for power, but sound...i'm thinkin of doin the same thing, kinda similar turn down tip too, but just wondering about sound..if its even an issue

plus i think it'll be cool to crank it up this winter and see a big fog rollin out from underneath the truck

For one bend, that short a distance, it's probably not a problem. Mandrel bends are better for sound and flow, though. I have a 3.0, and that's a 2.5" pipe, very short. It can't make much difference in my case.

youll be ok for the crush bend right there, it dumps right out after it, so youre not looking at much restriction, and the pipe size, even where its bent, is plenty for your 3.0

Too much trouble -- who cares for about 14" of pipe?

Whatever works man... at least your aiming it toward the ground, some people just let them fall off on the road (and leave it) and never fix their exhaust.
