Okay so my fiance has been telling me to post on here so maybe yall could help. When I drive my truck I get out and I'll smell something. It smells like something burning or melting. There's not smoke and we can't find out where it's coming from. My truck is an 04 with only like 35,000 miles on it. I have noticed alot of brake dust on the rims but other than that idk. I don't think the brakes have been changed since there aren't many miles on it. Yesterday we decided we're going to go to Jonesboro, AR to visit some family and right before we left we put $40 in my truck (which usually fills it up). I left the truck running while he pumped it and when we left I looked down at the gage and it was still on E. So I pulled over to a store and shut the truck off and turned it back on and it still didn't move. So not wanting to travel not knowing how much gas we have we went back to the house and he unhooked the battery and let it sit and it finally registered F. It seems like its going down correctly. (Jonesboro only takes us about 1/4th of a tank.) So we're just kinda puzzled why it would be doing these things being a not so old truck. Any advice or imput will be appreciated

 

might be one of the rear drums thats making that smell. next time you drive, smell the the rear wheel. i had that problem, no smoke or anything but i finally found out it was one of my drums. the internals were all screwed up and the cylinder was spewing brake fluid since it was toast lol

 

I’d start by looking for the obvious. Check along side the exhaust system from the manifolds to the tail pipe for any signs of sagging and burnt wiring harness or anything else that might be coming into contact with the exhaust system. Beyond that if it hasn’t exhibited any other symptoms such as blowing fuses, brake problems, clutch slipping (if manual trans), belt squealing, etc. that can help pinpoint a hard failure I’d recommend taking it to a shop and have them take a look at the gauge issue and smell.

 

thanks for the advice. i changed the front breaks the other day and noticed their was oil on the ground. i think the smell is the oil leaking on top of the exhaust. now, we just have to find out where. i just hope its not a big problem. its an 04' with only 33,000 miles. any one else have anything similar happen?

 

sometimes the gas gauge wont respond right away, especially when leaving the engine running while getting gas, next time see if shutting the truck off helps, as for the burning smell, just start smelling things until you can pinpoint it. smell the brakes and places that get hot
