Replacing the "chip" for a kill switch

Replacing the "chip" for a kill switch

Some rangers came with it i guess its a lil computer chip looking thing by the hood release that you can take out so your truck wont start. Only thing is mines works like **** and you have to move the chip just right so i want to take that out and put a switch instead. Any one know the wires to do this off of? Maybe i can just bypass this and run the switch off the roll over switch wires but i need to know which wires go to that thing that need to be stuck together

Are you talking about the OBD2 access port??

No its a 93. If you go in this thread here https://www.ranger-forums.com/forum2...ht=kill+switch and scroll down there is a pic of what im talking about. Mine looks a lil different but i think thats just cause its older. But you have to wiggle it around to get it to start i would rather just bypass that and have a switch

If I'm not mistaken it's an aftermarket item usually installed at the dealer to prevent theft off their lot. They sell it as an extra when you purchase the vehicle. If you don’t op for it they they disable it (with a jumper) leaving the connector and relay under the dash. My Ranger had it and I just removed it and the relay.

One word of caution though, they may have used the Air Bag wiring for power, as in my case. So be careful and disconnect the battery before removing the relay. You will have to reconnect the wiring to the ignition circuit after cutting the relay out.

Ok i would rather just put a jumper on it i just dont want to hack the wires then it not be possible to get it working. You know which wires you jumped to disable it?

My 2000 had one of those..i think they stopped using them in the 01+ rangers

Yeah well mines a 93 so that info didnt help me much...

eh beggers cant be choosers. Get a haynes manual and look it up.

Unfortunately no. Theres about a dozen different versions of these devices on the market and trying to back track the manufacture and then getting them to tell you which wires what. You may be able to figure it out once you pull the module down and using a DVOM. But the simpler thing is just yank, cut, and splice the ignition wire back together.

Yeah this thing has like 5 wires going into it so i dont think its goin to be to easy to just jump a wire. So where is it tied into the ignition at? Do i got to pull the dash to get to it?

Remove the mounting screws for the connector under dash letting it hang. Remove the panel under the steering wheel (and metal shield if present). Then follow the wiring to the module. Remove the module and pull it down as far as the wiring will allow. You will either see a couple of wires going to a relay or just two going over to and into the sterring column. If theres a relay look for the two wires coming from the steering column and remove these from the relay (they should be the same color). These will be the ignition wires for the starter from the key switch. Re-connect these two wires together. Remove the module, relay, and the connector. Make sure engine starts. Replace panel.

Alright got into it and from the wiring loom there is a white and black wire that come out and plug into where the chip goes then the other 3 wires off the chip just ground out. Other then that it doesnt go to any box or relay and the loom continues up to the ignition area. So do i just cut the white and black and connect them together?

OK to make sure I understand this what your saying is you have a white and black wire plus three other wires that come out the back of the connector under the dash where you put the key chip in and the other three wires are connected to a common ground? If this is correct, how did you determine the other three just ground out? Also, did you follow the white and black wires up to where they go into the column harnes? If not then follow them till you either see for sure they do in fact go into the column wiring or you come across the module.

Next, if you have one, take a VOM or DVOM set to 12V DC scale and back probe between ground and the white wire then same on the black wire with the ignition off and then with it on. See what readings you get. If one does not show voltage in the on or off position then try setting the meter to ohms and retesting between just that wire and ground and see what you readings you get with the ignition off only.
