After my experience with the mud, I've found that my keyless entry no longer works. On my way out of the woods, I noticed that the power locks were figgiting and that they would not work properly from the buttons on the doors. After everything dried out, the buttons on the doors work but the keyfob does not. I have 3.0v on the battery in the fob and everything else in the truck seems to work fine. I have pulled and checked every fuse in the dashoard fuse panel and all are good. Any suggestions what this might be?? My theft light on the dash still works as well if this matters.

I've disconnected my battery and will leave it for about 30 minutes before plugging it back in. Hopefully, this will reset the keyless entry unit but if not I'll have some work to do. Where is the keyless entry module located in a 2000 XLT??

Mine have the same problem with the key fob or the door buttons. When you press the button they will only fidget. Only sometimes will the drivers door unlock. Ford dealer told me I needed new actuators so I bought em but I can't get the old ones out to get the new ones in. PITA!!!

 

after you do the computer reset, try setting the code into the key fobs again
instructions are in your owners manual, you have to reset all of them
I bet that works.....

 

I think its in the passenger side kick panel but that might be totally wrong.

2001-2003 have the Central Security Module above the glovebox hidden behind the passenger air bag. 1997 has a Remote Anti-theft Personality module on "left-hand rear of cab", according to the manual. I don't have a 2000 book but yours will probably match one of the above - it sounds like the RAP is mounted lower and may be more vulnerable to a mud flood..

 

That's good, Bob. I gave him bad advice and told him to look behind the airbag in the dash. Tom has a CD I gave him for his truck. Tom, have you consulted it yet?

 

Of course not. I always check with you guys first... :-) Neil, I'll try resetting the fobs. Hopefully the thing just got boogered and forgot my fob when I was stuck.

Something like that... Hahaha... Unfortunately, I don't think that's it. I tried the programming sequence in my manual and the locks didn't lock/unlock as they were supposed to which I'm assuming means that the module is shot. I'll just have to live without it for a little while I guess.

 

If it is down low like that, Tom, take it out and flush it with clean water. SOMEHOW that unit has an antenna connected to it, and the fob radio signal is very weak. The mud from the pines is both acidic and conductive and it wouldn't take much to short out the radio portion of the keyless entry control system.

When I get home today, I'll look at the CD and see if I can give you some guidance. But if you find the module, take it and flush it THOROUGHLY with clean water, dry it with a hair dryer, and put it back and it might be fine. It's UNLIKELY to have been damaged much, if at all -- it's probably just shorted out in the radio section.

 

I found it, flushed it, and dried it and it's not working. The antenna is actually a loop inside the box and it's pretty cool. I even tried compressed air to blow the mud out and it was no good. It looks like unless I can find one in a boneyard, I'll be installing an aftermarket unit. That kills the idea of adding the keypad, doesn't it??

 

Not if the switches in your door are working. That unit may be repairable anyway. Since it has IC chips on it, drying it with the dryer to get the water out from under the chips is real important. Once you washed and dried it, you might still need to do what Neil suggested.

Your manual switches (I believe) actually drive that box. That's why I think it's the radio circuitry that is not working. Maybe we can get together soon and I can put a meter/scope on it and see if it's doing anything.

I have compatible radio modules from older units laying around if it's modular. If it's single board, I still have some Explorer units around that may have useful parts. Can you take a photo of it and it's location for me? I'd like a pic of the top of the circuit board also.

 

That module is out of the truck now and the switches still work so I think it's probably just the radio circuit in that box. I looked and there is still some mud on it that flushing didn't quite get off so I'll try flushing it again and maybe using a soft bristled brush to get the mud off. That, the hair dryer, and a good overnite sit may do it a world of good. I'll try to get a pic of the board once I get it clean. I have pics now of it covered in mud.

 

Maybe a prevenative thing to do will be coat that stuff with some electrical compound or something. The submarine mod is getting popular these days.

 

Well, I've flushed and dried the thing and it's still not working. My next question is what other vehicles may use the same (or a compatible) keyless entry module?? The part number on the box is: f87f-15k602-aa.

Tom, I have one. I was going through all the junk I accumulated and I have an F87F-15K602-AA. It's a gray box with two metal brackets attached. Build date is 1997 or so, but the part number matches so perhaps it'll work. You're welcome to try it and if it works, it's yours.

Yeah, me too...my shop has been a mess, but I don't think one is hiding here.

I got some RAP (Remote Antitheft Personality) modules to investigate the idea of adding a factory alarm to my 2002 Ranger. Never did get it solved. The older Rangers and Explorers, as it turns out, use external relays and completely different wiring than the Gen V Rangers. I would have had to add a bunch of relays and junk and just didn't feel it was worth it.

So, I have these boxes I got out of junked Explorers to experiment with. One I took apart and abused -- but this one is intact and never messed with other than to take the board out and look at it to see if it matched the other one.

So, no magic -- just dumb luck that I got one that matches Tom's. The build date from this one is from late 1997 so it would have probably been for the 1998 model year putting it in the same generation as Tom's 2000 -- assuming there is that much commonality between Ranger's and Ex's from that "era".

At any rate, the part numbers match. I guess now we try it and see.

 

Sounds like it will work out well. I don't suppose you'd be game for helping me figure out my locks John. I just can't seem to get the old actuators out to get the new ones in.

 

John, I don't know what to say besides THANK YOU!! I never expected anyone to have one lying around.... When you got them out of the explorers, where was it located?? The passenger kick panel of the ones I was looking at has a completely different module.

 

Actually, Tom, I don't know. I wanted a couple and eitther Carl or Adam were doing JY runs and pulled the two I have at my request. They may be behind the airbag like in later Rangers. I can find out though, it's in the CD. I may have told them where to pull these after looking at it, but I don't remember.
