2004 Owners, how does your horn sound?
#1
In all the new trucks I test drove, the horn sounded different than the 2003 models. From inside the cab, it's kinda high pitched toy like. I first thought maybe a dual horn setup, and the lower frequency wasn't working/hooked up. But nope.
When I double click the keyless entry lock button the horn sounds much better, but it's only a short bleep. Perhaps it just sounds better from the outside?
Either way, I think I need to find a replacement... Something more truck like and less pee-wee herman like.

Well I agree with LVMPD1981, when I sound the horn off the remote, it's pretty darn loud and sounds fine. But if I hit the horn while in the cab, it's kinda cheesy sounding.
rong, for a replacement I'd figure we could find just about anything in a junkyard and swap it. I really don't know much about over the counter aftermarket horns, but I'm sure there are plenty out there. I'll see if I find out anything interesting/worth while.

When I first got my '04 I noticed the same European-sounding horn sound you did - it sounded like a Fiat! Well, it turns out that Ford changed the horn model from a dual to a single horn part way through the 2004 model year. I'm pretty sure that the change was made on all ‘04's assembled after Nov. 2, 2004.
My original horn was a "Klaxon" brand made in France, Ford part number 4L5T-13802-AA. I'll be darned if I'll have a French horn in my truck (insert orchestra joke here).
The solution is as easy as your local Ford parts dealer. I ordered a 2003 dual horn, Ford part number 4L3Z-13832-AA. The list price is $29.32, and 1stfordparts.com sells it for $21.99.
The new horn comes with the support bracket and the correct electrical connector, and it's easy to change since there's plenty of clearance behind the grill. It’ll make your Ranger sound like an American truck, not a French one.

I got a horn off of an old cadillac in a junk yard a good while ago and put it in my truck. It was hilarious. I just took it in for inspection and it didn't pass, lol. They installed a new one, the old stock ones were filled with mud or something, free from warranty, haha.
They put in a dual setup rig, it's pretty loud, but just the plain junk horn sound.

What really bothers me is that Ford seems to be gradually substituting cheaper parts, and/or taking features out of new Rangers. Remember map, cargo and glove box lights? Even front and rear mud flaps? They're gone now.
This process (I call it "decontenting") has clearly hurt sales. This year is the last year (based on '04 sales) that Ford can truly say that the Ranger is the top "compact" pickup. 2005 Ranger sales look pretty grim.
