Effects of heel diameter vs weight on braking

I found some interesting info from a knowledgeable member on RPS. I believe that diameter matters much more than weight in braking an acceleration. He had an interesting take on the effectsa during braking. Similar to mine, but more detailed.

The way ABS really works is that it will monitor each wheel speed and, as necessary, reduce the pressure to the wheels individually to keep each of the wheels turning at nearly the same speed. It does have the ability to accomodate more or less traction effort at the wheels, but only by reducing it from what you are generating by how hard you are pushing the pedal. The ABS system will only pulse if it senses that one or more of the wheels are going significantly slower than the others, indicating pending lockup of the wheel(s).

BTW, that means that if you are on ice and you mash the brake pedal to the floor, all the wheels will lock up and the ABS will not cycle, because it sees all the wheels going the same speed. (I know this because I've tested it numerous times, wanting to know how it really operates.) So, ABS is not idiot-proof.

And, relating to the wheel size topic of this thread, the amount of brake pedal pressure it takes to stop the vehicle is related to the overall diameter of the tires, not the wheels. (If you have a 33" tire, it doesn't really matter whether its on a 15" or 24" rim, from a braking standpoint.) It does take a little more braking effort to stop a heavier wheel/tire, but that is minor compared to the mass of the vehicle, and is therefore not particularly important to braking. When the tire diameter increases, that requires more brake clamp force to generate the same number of pounds of braking effort at the road surface (to slow the vehicle at the same rate). That is why people w/ larger diameter tires often notice that their brakes wear faster (and also get hotter).

The weight of the tire/wheel assembly is much more of a factor in ride and handling - the larger unsprung weight is harder to keep in contact with the ground and doesn't ride as well nor handle as well.

As for discussion? You had a chance, you ( more or less ) flamed others whom are respected.

Right or wrong, I really wouldn't expect any serious responses. Your ' part2 ' thread was spammed, and it will probably happen again.

I would roll those 24's over to RPS as the crowd here from all different walks really don't care for what you had to offer.

This is coming from the sites unofficial ' ***** ' as I have been labeled by another member.
Sounds to me like I rattled the cage pretty good. The real shame is ignorance of the masses will always set the boundaries for those who are too foolish to recognize the concept.

what i understand is that if your tire weighs as much as you say it does, then my 35 doesnt come close.

game over, get some bigger brakes
