I have a tomtom and if the batery is low it will not connect to satilites on startup. But I have it mounted to the charger so it isn't a problem. The only problem I see with tom tom is that their E.T.A. is off sometimes so the fastest route isn't always the fastest.
But Tomtom does have map share where corrections are made, many voices to download and choose from (I have Yoda right now) and there are allways updates avalable to download from there sight, never had a problem with lagtime either.

I have the consumer report right in front of me as I am in the market for a GPS as well
They rank the Garmin, TomTom, and Magellan as the best units
Garmin 760 is ranked #1 retails for $600
Garmin 660 is ranked #2 retails for $500
TomTom Go 920T is #3 retails for $650
I think I'm going to go with with the garmin nuvi 350 after researching all the units and their capabilities
I'd definately check out the consumer report issue if you can find it online or somethin, it's the June 2008 issue

i love my garmin 60cs. its a hand held unit, which is nice because i can use it for hiking and biking. it comes with a decent base map, but i had to purchase the extra stuff (stores, dining, lodging, etc.) for $100 extra. i believe that the automobile ones such as the nuvi comes with that stuff already built in, and you don't need to pay extra.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 200. I got it for about $100. It is a reconditioned unit and I have had no problems. It is very easy to use and very accurate. The only thing I would like to have is trip "learn" or "remember" for when I take the same route all the time. Also have it learn my route because sometimes it is faster than the way it tells me to go. Overall it is a great starter unit and does everything need it to do for now.
Thanks,
Jason

I have the garmin nuvi 200 Wide screen i got it for 200 bucks at best buy i originally bought it for 260, but then i found it at radio shack for 200. Best Buy refunded my money back. The best thing to do would be ask the difference in some of the models i know the the next version up from mine was 50 bucks more and the only difference was that it Said the street name instead of "Turn Right in 100 feet"
now to me that wasn't worth an extra 50 bucks....

I think it depends where you are... I have the one XL and it says you can update stuff online but there are a lot of roads/places missing... Also you can pay extra for traffic and stuff if that's something you're looking for.

I just picked up a garmin nuvi 260W today, haven't had a chance to take it on the road yet but it's very simple to navigate thru. and the I'm real glad I got the widescreen.
and you can make your little car look like a blue monster truck!
But I did put in a route to where I'm moving to new york and it says a wayyy different route than google maps... I guess we'll find out

Go online to garmin home page and update it and download some new icons.

and do you need the USB cable to download stuff from the web to the unit? I tried to register my product online and it said to connect it but the USB cord is an accessory I gotta pay extra for?
