Icon9 Speedo - ABS Sensor Troubles..

Hi guys & Gals great forum you have here! I have a 2000 ford ranger lt with the four cylinder 5 speed trans. The speedo has been bouncing and quits alltogether sometimes. I replaced the abs sensor in the rear diff. and the autoparts store told me that there is a speed sensor on the transmission however i can not see it. i read on a google forum that years 98-00 had no sensor on the trans .... & that it infact runs on the abs in the wheels???? Please help as i am unsure if I have 4 or two wheel abs and the best ways to test or buy new parts. I first experienced the troubles after washing the inner cab at the local car wash. So I thought it may be a short in the electrical system inside?// Are there any fuses i can check??/ All the ones in the panel @ drivers' side are currently good though. I heard it may be a GeM module as well. ???? Any AND all help is appreciated! Thanks in advance ~ Ironhed

Believe the 99-00 speed sensor is located on the transmission or transfer case....could also be the rear end...i just dont remember off hand.

It's easy to see if you've got 4whel abs. Look at your front spindles/knuckles...if there's a wire coming down the frame to the front side of the spindle/knuckle, and that wire goes to a sensor in the knuckle/spindle, youve got 4whel abs.

yes....spindle/knuckle are all interchange able words. Generally spindle is 2wd, knuckle is 4x4.

The thing thats in between your upper and lower control arms...your brakes attach to it. Take a look at it. I'm pretty positive those speed sensors only work in conjunction to the ABS system though.

The 98~00 Ranger vehicle speed sensor is the ABS sensor on the rear axle diff housing. It doesn't matter whether you have 2WD or 4WD, RABS or 4WABS. (2001 and later have the sensor on the transmission.)

Look under the chassis to find a large electrical connector directly below the driver seat. Open it by removing the center bolt. Every wire to the rear half of the truck, including the VSS passes through this connector. Water will often get inside and cause shorts or corrosion. Dry it out, look for damaged pins and reassemble with dilectric grease packed inside.
