...and it's destroying my gas mileage. When people are near the truck when I pull up, they must think I don't know how to drive a clutch... the RPMs reach over 3k sometimes and it revs up really loud.

By the way, they call me Mav... I hang out on the AMC Eagle forums working on my Eagle projects. I'm an AMC guy at heart, but before I was an AMC fan, my old man raised me on Ford. I will always have a soft spot for Ford trucks. Anyways, I'm new to the site and haven't introduced myself yet or posted pictures, but I will.

The truck actually isn't mine. It is my step fathers. I am storing it on my property while he is fighting a war. The rest of the family is stationed in Germany. They will be back in September. In the meantime, I want to do something nice for him... he's out fighting for our country and hes taking care of my mother and my siblings... and he takes alot of crap from them (and me sometimes, lol), so I want to do something nice for him. He loves his truck and he's been having issues with it... I'm going to paint it for him, replace some interior pieces, give it a full tune-up, install projector headlights and HID bulbs, and I'm going to rhino line te bed for him and get rid of the crappy plastic junk. Before I can do all of that... I need to get it running right.

So, a couple years ago he took it in and they said it was the fuel pump. So he had it replaced and a few months later the problem came back... so he tried swapping it out himself this time. When he pulled the pump, he said it looked like some of the wiring on it was melted and fused... kinda freaky inside a gas tank if you ask me. I had never heard of this. He said he tried replacing just this particular part, but had to buy the entire fuel pump. Well he did... and it fixed the problem.... and again here we are down the road... and it's doing it again.

Now on my AMC forums, our cars have crazy little tweaks like this all the time that most would think is some crappy factory default... maybe this is the same, but over there we know how to fix things like that. I'm assuming one of you knowledgable Ranger guys can help me out and tell me what to do to fix this problem and prevnt it from happening again.

C'mon help me out fellas!

By the way... I'm in Galesburg, Il... so if anyone lives close and wants to help me with it. I'll buy the beer and give you the tour of the AMC Sanctuary!

I have had this happen a few times while slowing down with the clutch in but not sure what is causing it. Usually revs up to aobut 3 grand and stays there till I let the clutch back out.

Well, from what I've found on the other threads... I'll try the PCV valve and the IAC and check the TB and clutch and gas cables and go from there.

Apparently, theres supposed to be a clutch sensor as well?

Looks like I need to buy a book on the Ranger... bah!

 

You know what my ranger does this too. Same year. I usually just let the clutch out so it drops real qucik then but it back in before it stalls. I have no clue why it does it. Ive considered cleaning my throttle cable because it can be sticky but its so random.

 

Check first for vacuum leaks, check the PCV and clean the throttle body. I had this same problem with my truck and it was the IAC motor. Try unplugging it, some will stay running and some will not. if it will, drive it and see if the problem goes away. if it does you know now it is the IAC

 

Incorrect voltage from the Throttle Position Sensor at closed throttle can also cause this problem.
