Hey guys, hoping to hear benefit of other's knowledge here. I'm doing a clutch job on my old 1989 Ranger. The exhaust system wasn't so good, so I figured I might as well do that too while I'm under there.

I like for my truck to have just a plain quiet stock sound. Not looking for a rumbling hot rod kind of sound. However, I bought a Magnaflow bolt-on catalytic converter that is supposed to be "performance". The guys at the auto store didn't make too big a deal about it being performance; I just asked for a new cat and that was what they had for a good price.

So my question is: if I get a regular bolt-on muffler and attach it, will I have the quiet stock sound I prefer? I assumed the sound is determined mainly by the muffler. Am I right?

It's a 4 cyl if that makes any difference.

Just looking to bolt things on. Don't have welding experience, and with some other projects I've got going I don't have time for the learning curve just now.

You won't gain any "performance" with a performance cat. But the performance cats are usually the cheapest and clamp right on so that is why they are usually bought over a stock replacement.
