running rich"black tail pipe"

I have 2000 ranger 3.0 and recently replaced the flex fuel sensor with a code by pass unit. While it solved one problem with check engine light I still have a code problem with the left bank running rich. I disconnected battery and light goes out I can drive miles and stays off but when I shut it down and restart in less than a minute it will come back on. When I first start it up I get water and black corbon shooting out and smells slightly of gas. I want to know if the o2 sensor has anything to do with the fuel mixture? Even though I do not get a
code for 02 sensor? Any help out there? Rich
