97 Ranger Speedo/ODO

Sorry in advance, I'm sure that this has been covered about a thousand times...but....I have a 97 2.3 2wd 5 speed XLT. The speedo/odometer just started intermittently working.
Does the VSS send the signal to the odometer also (as I would imagine it to)?

Additionally the fuel gauge has never worked since I've owned the Truck. Would you think that this is a problem with the cluster, or the VSS and the Fuel sending unit?

Does this sound like the VSS is taking a turn for the worse? Hopefully so as that appears to be an easy fix.

Thanks!

I believe there was a problem with some of the VSS's. However, i'm pretty sure they aren't related to the Gas gauge. That could be a sending unit issue.
however, for the life of me i cannot remember how your supposed to diagnose the VSS.

both the speedo and odometer don't work, or just the odometer? if it's both, then i would say vss. located on the trans, driver side (i think) near the tail section. if just the odometer stops working, then i would say it's the cluster. they use a plastic gear for the odometer/trip drive, and they tend to strip out. they might start sticking a little here and there, then fail completely.
