cruise control

something i noticed on the way home from work this morning... if your cruise control is on, it doesn't have to be maintaining your speed, but you have to have it turned on (by pressing the on button) if you tap the "set+" button, several (5-10) times, the gas pedal goes to the floor and stays there... i was cruising down the hiway at about 110km/h (65mph) tapped it about 10 times, got me to about 120, and stopped tapping it... my truck continued to accelerate to 145km/h (90 mph) where i hit the brakes to make sure that i had, infact, brought my own truck home, instead one of the work vehicles, which are made by toyota... i was happy to see that i was infact, driving my truck, and when i tapped the brakes, it stopped accelerating, like it should

anyone had this happen to them? any idea why this happens and if it's supposed to?

normal operation is this:

to turn it on, press on. and if you're at the speed you wanna be set at, hit set. then youre pedal will lift off your foot and toward the floor. if you hit accel, 1 press means maybe 1/2mph increase. hit it a bunch of times it'll keep accelerating. it'll also continue to get deeper into the floor pan. hit coast, it'll slow down a notch...hit it a bunch of times and it'll continue to slow down. hit off, it'll turn off. hit the brakes, it'll turn off. hit the clutch, idk. i'm too scared to hit it after i did it once and and the rpm's skyrocketed! lol.

but...i never use it. I've seen the mpg numbers that tell me i shouldn't hit that cruise button. 15mpg at 75. no cruise, 17mpg at 75.

i usually just press and hold to accelerate... i tried as few as 3 times, it accelerated for about 2 seconds and stopped... but i also tried literally 5-6 and it jumped up like 30 km, which is like 10mphish

i generally kick the cc off if i see a hill coming up, and i use my foot, just don't accelerate up the hill, i allow the truck to slow, once i hit the crest, or just past i hit resume

if you press the clutch, it will turn the cc off, my dad's f-150, the clutch switch is below where the clutch plate disengages, and if you don't press it in fast enough, the rpm will rise up like you say... on mine, the switch is right at the top, same spot as the brake light switch, i have bumped my clutch and turned it off a few times

I've noticed with the Ford systems one tap is equal to about 1 mph. So you wanna bump up 4 mph? Tap 4 times evenly and slowly. Tap tap tap and so on, not taptaptaptap. lol . And you'll get 4 mph. One of the few cars that will actually do that that I've driven. Most go ape **** when you tap them. lol

Cruise + Use = Economy..... At lest, it does for me!

I'm normally not a "features" kind of guy, eschewing fooforah like power windows and door locks, etc.

But one feature that I've used the daylights out of whenever I've had it to use is Cruise Control.

I've had my 2007 4 X 4 SuperCab Ranger for about three weeks now. It is 4.0 / 5spd M / 3.73 (Not 4.11, as I thought) with 265/70 -16 tires. I use cruise whenever I am on the turnpike or interstate and have the opportunity to use it. Four fill-ups have yielded a combined city / highway mpg of ticks over 20 mpg; i.e., one tank delievered 20.1, another 20.2, another 20.1, and one was 20 even. One all highway tank, with cruise set at 65, yielded 23 miles per gallon.

Now, I didn't buy my Ranger expecting this kind of fuel economy. But it is a very nice bonus.

I hate you. My 60k mile, 04 4x4 extended cab with 265/75/16's, 4.10 gears, and 5 spd doesn't get close to that. When I bought it I had a 400 mile trip home with it where it was very close to 20 mpg but ever since then its been pretty terrible. It has new plugs, maybe I need to check the air filter and O2's.

He he he... My 3.slow with 3.73's and 32's gets 27 mpg at 65 on the freeway. And 19.5 in the city.

It's times like these that I'm glad I got the 3.0. When I see that hill in front of me I dont anymore tho... But when at the pump I love my little engine that could. lol

Cruising rpm is like... 1900-2000. its pretty low. This was measured on a ONLY freeway run. filled back up at just over a 3/4 tank. It was all level freeway, and zero traffic. I admit its crazy, but it was under the best circumstances available. I average about 23-25 on the freeway.
