i wouldnt...just take your dome light completely out(housing and all) and tap into the wires that lead to the screw threads(thats how the dome gets its power)

are you sure you put the dome light power wire on? there are 2 that need to go to the dome...the map light power and dome light power...do the lights on the ohc light up when you hit the map lamp buttons?

map lights being the one for the buttons? and no they dont. and for the 04 you only have one wire to the dome light it told me to conecct the green orange for the map light to the green orange on my dimmer switch. none of the lights work it driving me nuts i thought they would be the easy part lol

  • Tap the black/blue of the Ex overhead console into the black/blue going to the 2004 Ranger dome.
  • Tap the green/orange of the Ex overhead console into the green/orange at the 2004 Ranger dimming module.
  • Connect the black ground wire of the Ex overhead console to chassis ground
.If it still doesn't work, check fuse #13 in the Smart Junction Box (PS kick panel).

Also, remember that your Ranger has the "Battery Saver" feature that times out and shuts off power to the courtesy lamps after the ignition has been off for a while. This can sometimes fool you into thinking that something has gone wrong while working on a mod that involves the courtesy lamps. Try cycling the ignition key and/or opening/closing the door to reset the timer.

well i checked all the wiring for it and it all is right i even took a picture of the map lights connected to the dome switch. my dome light works in the truck just not the console so I dont think its the fuse. Is there any way I can pull the console and just hook the lights up to my motorcycle battery to see if they even work? Im starting to think that they might be the problem.

Bench testing should be easy. The negative of the voltage source would be connected to the ground wire (BK) of the console pigtail. I would then connect the dome wire (BK/LB) and map light wire (LG/OR) to the 12V positive one at a time to test those functions. Obviously, each map pushbutton would need to be cycled to its 'on' positions for the corresponding lamp to illuminate as a map.
