Hey guys/ gals. My '02 ranger will sometimes hold the rpms for a moment the it will go down to the regular 1000 rpm. Sometimes it will hold it longer than others and sometimes it wont do it at all??? I'm completely stumped, anyone that could help me out??

Are you talking about right after you start it up?

Nothing seems out of the ordinary. When you first start up, typically that is high idle, then it goes to low or normal idle

the guy down at napa told me to spray the housing for my throttle cable with WD40 to see if that would fix it, and sure enough it wasn't going to be that easy, im just stumped on what to do because you cant get a new throttle cable and put it on..... could you?

It doesn't sound like your throttle cable is messed up

no. I distinctly remember a post about this issue. His Revs were sky rocketing and holding at damn near redline when shifting. then not coming back down when in gear

Mine does this too from time to time, usually after i go over something rough and the truck bumps enough, it wll rev up to 2500-3000 rpms or so and want to hold it, after a few seconds of driving it seems to calm down though, never really looked into it, but it would be good to know in case its no bueno.

Try cleaning your IAC (Idle Air Control) motor, Its a silver thing on your intake plenum . Its held in by 2 - 8mm bolts. it controls extra airflow into intake so engine will idle, There is a little valve and a spring and its probably full of grime and carbon. Take some carb cleaner or brake clean and clean it out, and make sure the bit inside moves back and forth freely. if not replace it.
