4 hi problem on 1999 4.0

4 hi problem on 1999 4.0
I've searched the forum and no luck.
I have a 99 with push button 4x4 and 4.0 liter engine.
Yesterday in the snow I would engage the 4 hi and it would work for a few blocks and the disengage, but the 4 hi light would stay on with my rear end sliding all over the place. I stopped a few times and turned the switch to 2 and then back to 4 hi and the same thing would happen...4 hi would work for a few blocks then back to 2
Any ideas?
