Stiff door lock when window is in rolled up position
Hi,
I'm new here so I'm guessing this is the place to ask?
I have a '96 Ford Ranger XLT Supercab with an all mechanical (no power locks, no power windows) door that just developed a problem with the lock being extremely stiff when the window is in the rolled up or nearly rolled up position. When the window is in the rolled down or nearly rolled down position, the lock is fine and functions in its normal loose manner. I noticed that as I rolled up my window just prior to the stiff door lock, I heard and felt a kind of catching and scraping noise but didn't think much of it because I thought it might be due to the window being a little dirty.
Any ideas?

There is a braided fabric loom around your lock rod. This could have been worn down causing friction between your window and your lock rod. I would take you door apart and look at the lock rod for this loom. Should be white or maybe a little brown from dirt.
To take your door apart, remove the two screws behind the handle you use to pull the door closed. Then remove the black handle bezel. Pull on the handle and slide your fingers around the bottom to the top to release the snaps. Behind this bezel there is a screw you need to remove. Then you need to remove a screw in the lower corner (corner on the side with the latch) of the door. Next you need to remove your crank handle. Pry around the edges of the handle where it meets the door. The handle is like a two piece design so the outer part is actually a covering that you pop looks and swing around the handle **** as a pivot. You should be able to see a hole with a torx head screw in the center. Remove this screw and you can pry the handle loose. Then you should be able to pull up on your door panel and it should come out.
Behind the door panel is a white water shield that can be pulled away. You shouldn't need to pull it all the way off just the upper corner near the lock rod. Here you should be able to look at the rod.
To see what is touching you can pop your handle back on with out the panel to crank the window up and down.
