I'm planning on replacing valve stem seals in my 1989 Ranger with the 2.3L soon. Most of the stuff I've seen suggests using the KD Tools 3087 compressor to do this with head on engine. It looks like that tool was discontinued years ago. I saw one on ebay, but was wondering if there is another tool that can be used to compress the valve springs with the head on the tool?

Look at OTC 4573 Universal Overhead Valve Spring Compressor
Touchy to use but once you get the hang of it very easy to use

One heads up, use towels to cover ALL oil drains in the head AND all around the head because the retaining clips can go flying.
Not a bad idea to buy a few before starting, so if one does get lost you will not be stuck, and you can always take them back for refund.

I assume you will be using compressed air to hold valves closed while removing spring
Make sure piston is at TDC in that cylinder, because one little push on valve stem will break the air seal and valve will drop.

I use a rope in the cylinder to hold valves closed, another option.
