I recently installed an Auto Meter NV series trans temp gauge (http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku) and when i turn my lights on the gauge obviously lights up. Well, the lights in the gauge are too bright, almost blinding at night - very annoying.

Is there a product or way to dim the trans temp gauge without dimming all the other lights on my dash?

Something like a separate dimmer switch seems like it would work.

You can add a resistor to the + side of the light wire. That will reduce some of the voltage going to the light.

 

a potentiometer is what you need. but i am not sure the specs it would require, radio shack sells them it will have a dial **** same concept as the dimmer switch in the dash.

If you don't want to do the math, you could use either a variable resistor or 2 legs of a potentiometer to determine the resistance that you need. RS sells a cheap bag assortment of small simple potentiometers that are good for experimentation. Once you find a pot that gives the desired amount of dimming, you could measure its resistance and use a fixed resistor of the same value to wire in series. Or you could select a fancier variable resistor or potentiometer with the right resistance range to dash mount.

Another idea - I don't know if that particualr gauge uses a regular incandescent bulb like the older Autometer gauges. If it does, you might be able to get one of those little "color change" condoms that slip over the bulb. The ones that Autometer ships with some of their gauges cut down light output quite a bit.
