MIL = teh suck. i want my 3.0 back
i drove my 03 3.0 for 56K miles and never had a single issue. swapped for a 02 4.0 w/41K, and i have had 2 MILs in the last three weeks.
first was P1400, 99% sure its a DPFE, so i swapped one on. i replaced about 657695136873443 DPFEs on rangers/explorers while i was a tech, so i know they are junk, lol.
2 weeks to the day(today), the light is back on.
this time it reads P0401. i downloaded the DPFE/EGR troubleshooting page i found from bob and i will go thru that tomorrow. but its still probable that i will be gettin another DPFE.
2weeks??? come on....
been a long time since i was a tech, but isnt emmissions covered beyond the 3/36K? like 7/75K or 8/80K or sumthin? if so ill take it back to them to deal with it this time....

Emission parts defects 3/36,000
Emission performance (failed test) 2/24,000
PCM and catalytic converters 8/80,000
The coverage on California-certified vehicles is somewhat broader in most categories.
Under certain circumstances, the government can force recalls outside of the warranty periods. The manufacturer can also voluntarily recall problem parts.
More complete info in the warranty booklet that came in the owner's manual packet.

my DPFE day - long read
thanks bob for the trouble shootin guide. gave me the specifications and tolerances i needed to test everything.
checked everything visually, and for loose parts. ok
back probed the new sensor and found 4.3v constant, key on, on the signal wire. should be 1v.
for shiggles i tossed on the stock sensor and found .13v constant on the signal wire. well at least i know the wiring is workin ok.
back to autozone with the 2week old sensor. no reciept, doh!
guy at autozone: "how do you know the sensor is bad?"
me: "i tested it"
guy at autozone: "no reciept, ill hafta give you in store credit cause i dont have another sensor, and the warehouse is out of stock as well"
store manager: "probly got recalled"
great....
guy at autozone: "who did the diagnostics?"
me: "me"
guy at autozone: *smart* "you have a diagnostic computer?!?"
me: "no, i have a voltmeter, and a cup of T pins, and i know how to use them."
guy at autozone: *bewildered* "year, make and model....."
so no help there except $26 i hafta find a way to spend. got to ford, $73!!!!! i know you get what you pay for, but three times the cost? ouch.
again for shiggles i take my new ford part to advance auto. i was there 2weeks ago and they couldnt get me the part. cross referenced every number we could find on the stocker and the wells part from autozone, nuthin. cross the ford part number and viola! we got a SPO part for $33.
ordered that, and took the unopened part back to the ford store.
i know the guys at advance and if this one craps out in two weeks they wont leave me high and dry like autozone and ford would.
so, tomorrow morning ill go get my new DPFE from advance auto and have them reset my MIL again. wish me good luck!

p0402
checked the supply and ground wiring again, ok
signal wire showed 2.1v constant KOEO.
guys at advance were kind enough to give me my money back. gonna try a ford sensor from the link DaveO posted.
my stock FORD DPFE lasted nearly 40K, hopefully a new FORD sensor will at least make it longer than 2wks.
