Does a cold air intake kit really improve gas milage and does dual exhaust improve mpg too?

 

With the money you spend on them, they're not worth the fuel mileage. Put the money towards fuel.

 

drop in K/N=60bux
buy a cheap muffler from pep boys=20bux
a couple of tube clams=10bux
and a turn down=5bux.

under 100bux you can get your high flow filter and muffler!

Tube clams, never heard of those. Wonder if they're any good for eatin'. Just givin' you a hard time man. But YES a cold air intake and exhaust help out gas mileage. I went from ~18 mpg city to ~21 city (hwy mpg's unknown, never took a road trip) on my 3.0 when I did the K&N FIPK and Flowmaster 40 SI/DO exhaust. Then I killed that with ~10" of lift and 33's. Now I'm at 18 city and 21 highway (with a few extra engine mods now).

 

.....it's one of those "all in your head" things. There's actually people who think that they've gained a NASCAR Truck after doing all those mods. It's crazy.

I have a MAC cone filter and it's just a noise maker. Sure there's more air getting into it, but even if I had an aftermarket exhaust, it still would be the same truck at the end of the day.

 

K&N is very expensive will a SPLITZ do the same thing?

I didn't say I have felt a difference in performance with these things, just that I got better mileage. I would say that even a 2-3 mpg gain would be good. With all the stuff I've done to my truck (lift and engine) I'm getting better mileage (18 city 21 hwy) than a I did in a stock 3.0 Ranger, and I sit 1' taller than them. I'd say that's pretty good.

 

18-21? thats great, the highest ive gotten was 16, i average just above 14. i mostly drive highway and never faster than 65-70. im am very interested in what happens as well

 

Is this the 4.0? Even then you should be getting better mileage, have you ever sea-foamed it?

Better breathing in + better breathing out = more efficient engine thus making more power thus using less fuel. Better efficient engine, the less fuel.

 

Yep, look at my sig... I've followed through from the front to the rear on breathign in and out.. has given me an immediately noticeable roughly 2 MPG's on average, combined with everythin else as well.. its not saying much really, I still only get 16-18ish tops My only problem is location.. I don't do much highway driving, and everythign out here is really hilly, so thats a natural gas chugging situation.. I'm sure driving around in town without being my natural lead foot self, I would probably be hitting upwards of 19ish

 

Get a tune-up, that will give you the best results if it hasn't been done in a while.

 

Oh, actually.. the BEST cost to performance ratio in terms of power/mpg's is getting yourself a tuner... go through the vendor sites and youll see em there, bama is a good one :-)

 

Hogwash... an aftermarket intake and a after cat exhaust do not improve milage. The PCM is constantly adjusting for maximum efficiency no matter what mods are in place.

Here are some real things you can do.

Tuner
Underdrive pullies
slightly over inflate the tires
Change your driving style. (use the brakes as little as possible)
Slow down
Loose weight from the truck.
Shift earlier with a manual
tune up
full synthetic oils

some of those guys up there dont have 4x4....that right there is an extra 3-4 mpg

 

i get 13 i hate it but i dont think it worth 500 for a tuner

 

When I had my 2000, I would get roughly 17-19 MPG city with a leadfoot (3.0L/manual, pullies, I/E, bamachips xcal2, efan). That was back when I drove like a maniac, my driving style is much more sedate now.. I could probably get 20+ city if I still had that truck. S omebody said it up there, but a tune up sounds to be in order for you guys getting 12MPG.. 4x4 or not, that's just horrible mileage.

What do they exactly do for a tuneup?

 

Change your spark plugs, wires, and if you have higher miles i'd change the coil pack (IMO).

 

I have a 92 4.0 automatic with a 4x4 a off road package what ever that last part means. It was consistantly getting BAD gas mil. I started once a week or so dumping in a can of the "large vehicle" fuel injector cleaner the $4 stuff in gold or silver can at Walys World. I have went on average to almost a consistant 20mpg on hwy. of course here is my known for a fact 2nd half of this story. I know withought a doubt that if I vary away from a known "good" gas such as BP I am going to litterally watch her spit it out the tail pipe. I just automaticly plan my fuel stops where I know the best gas is. The milege goes to a low of closer to 11-12 mpg in one tank. Also I am different then a lot of my family and friends i have no need for speed most of the time I cruiese 55mph and dont do the jack rabbit take offs. I'm figuring every time someone does that its like watching change fall outta their tail pipes at the cost of gas now adays very piece of change is adding up. BTW I went to a town 20 min north of me and gas is 3.75 gal!!

 

I used the same stuff and got like 1 or so miles better. I just need to get the other stuff so I can get even better.

 

I was always between 13-16 mpg,... but I have to use my truck for work (between 300 and 500 miles a day) so mileage is VERY important to me. I used a piece of rubber mining belt to make an air dam, and blocked off the corners of my grill (old aero tricks) and have it up now to 22.5 mpg. I plan on a complete tune up today or tomorrow (it doesn't run badly, just time for one), and just got a programmer (JET) and a 180 degree thermostat, and I'm hoping these will improve my mileage even more. I've been asked if the grill treatment has made it run hotter or want to overheat. No. Driving at slow speeds or idling forever stuck in road construction tie ups with the AC on reveals that the temp gauge doesn't deviate from normal operating temps. And, the air dam doesn't hurt off road performance, as it is made of rubber so it is flexible, any minor rocks or whatever wont hurt it at all. Sure, the air dam and aero tricks don't really work if you are crawling or something,....but at normal driving speed they work great.
