whining PS pump

my buddy has a 98 ranger 4x4. well lately, whenever the truck is running you can hear the PS pump whining, and it obviously gets louder when turning. we tried putting fluid in it. no luck.

is it going out?

Switching to synthetic fluid will quiet it down some.

Mine whines, and it has since I've got it. My friends F150 whines, 3 of my Friends with newer Rangers whines, all different years, but they all whine.

It a Ford thing.

use valvoline syn power full synthetic fluid. disconnect the return line off the reservoir by removing the spring clamp and crank it over while turning the wheel (with the wheels off the ground and the coil disconected) and then re connect the line and fill it.

start the truck, top it off, drive it slowly turning the wheel from lock to lock many many times, **** it off, let it sit and repeat til it stops whining, itll be really loud when you start.

lucas isnt recommended for steering racks. the ports are too small, i out lucas in mine and had to flush it 3-4 times to get the whining back to as quiet as it was with the original fluid in it!

The fix is made for racks. Mixed with the normal fliud I have no whine at all.Maybe your thinking of a different Lucas product. This Fix says Rack and Pinion right on it.Like I said mix it.Do not just run it straight.Follow the directions on the bottle.
There are also a couple of other companies that make a PS fix.

I just heard this yesterday while moving my truck. Its a faint whine. Not too loud but just loud enough where its noticable with the window down. Do you guys think i should flush it and try whats been said above or just wait until it gets worse then worry about it?

Ok so i just checked the ps pump reservoir and its right at the midpoint. the fluids good. when this whine happens it only does it when turning right and its a faint noise. nothing really loud and obnoxious but at the same time its still there and it still bugs me.

Put in very little brake fluid. Like the cap that comes on those bottles, fill it, then dump it into your ps reservoir. The cap, not the bottle, dummy.

My power steering pump started to "whine" this winter, in cold conditions on start up, -20 degrees celsius or colder. After warming up, the whine would mostly disappear.

Siphoned out as much power steering fluid (Mercon ATF) as I could and refilled with fresh fluid - did this over the course of a couple of days until about a liter of fresh ATF in total had been added, and that seems to have cured the whining noise.
