FX4 questions...

I was wondering what is the background of the FX4 pacage that ford offered...

The reason i want to know is I have a 02 with the off-road pacage and it has all of the same stuff is the FX4 but ive been seeing some 02's with the FX4 sticker. Did they have it as an option in 2002? If they did, was it one of thouse options that wasnt avaible untill later in the model year?

...Mine was made Febuary 22 2002...

In 2002 Ford introduced the Ford Ranger FX4 package, which was equipped w/ the torsen diff, manual transfer case (except w/ the auto tranny), alloy wheels, and BFG AT tires (among other things). For that model year there was also the Ranger Off Road Package (ORP), as w/ years before that.

In 2003 Ford changed the FX4 package name to the FX4 Level II. What was the ORP was renamed to the Ranger FX4.

So what was the '02 FX4 is the same as the '03+ FX4 LII.. well, up to 2004 where they pulled the manual transfer case, even on the manually equipped trucks. So the 2002 FX4 is the same as the 2003 FX4 LII. And the 2003 FX4 (non-LII) is the same as the 2002 (and earlier) ORP.. ..Any questions?!

FX4 was a package in 2002
Very similar to the present day Level II package.
Torsen rear, Alcoa wheels, additional skid plates.
I am sure there is a 2002 FX4 owner who knows more as this is what I have heard when people first looked at my truck a year ago......

what has been stated above is correct

2002 = FX4 off road
2003+ = FX4 II(same as 02's off road)
FX4 off road

The off road doesn't have the:
31 spline axle like the level II
i believe it doesn't have a fuel tank and trans. skid plate
it doesn't have the torsen limited slip

About the only differences on the 2002 FX4 vs 2003 FX4 Level II were superficial differences like the available exterior color choices and the interior. The 02 FX4 had a kind of pebble pattern center insert in the black buckets where the 03 LII had either a red or a blue insert. Mechanically, they were the same except the 03 got rid of the EGR like other 03 4.0L Rangers.

mine has the skid plates under the trasfer case and the gas tank... I was told that my rear axle is a 4.10 gear and 8.8....my rear locks up...if i have it in 2wd and do a burn, ill leave one black mark, but if i put it into 4x4 then back to 2wd, then it will leave 2 black marks

Your package is very similar to the 2003+ Fx4 Off-Road. The 2003+ FX4 Off-Road comes with Traction-Loc limited slip standard. In the Off-Road package like yours, I believe that it was optional. Look at the stamped metal tag on your axle housing - 4L10 is a limited slip, 4 10 is open.

What made me wonder was your statement that you could get it to do a single tire burnout. That shouldn't happen with a Traction-Loc regardless of whether you have used 4WD or not.

You can wear out a trak-loc in just a few thousand miles. After that it will bias just as much torque as an open axle will.
