I just got some new parts in today from the almighty Jp7, so I want to start a thread for this install, as I've decided to make it more complicated than it needs to be. Since he did this install, perhaps he can chime in on some of it.

What I have...
Autodimming rearview mirror with built in rear camera screen, mic, and compass out of 2010 F150 (pn 8U5A17E678EE)
Harness (pn 9L3Z14335JB)
Rearview license plate camera (generic)

What I want to do...
Obviously the main thing is the rear camera screen in the mirror. I didn't know it had the mic and compass built in, but I may try and utilize them. The harness I have only has wiring for the camera and the autodimming mirror function. The wiring overall doesn't seem to complicated, but I had to find the proper pinout for my mirror. Jp7 labeled all the connections I had but when I got it, I decided to do a little more research to see what I could get out of it.

I did find a pinout for the harness so that I can hook up these other features. I really have no use for the mic, but maybe I will add bluetooth to my stereo. the compass would be cool, I do have an OHC to install though, so nbd if I can't get it.

Very cool idea. I may try this once your done. I'll probably get the OEM rearview mirror though as i hate the licence plate mounted ones.

and by "mirror" you mean "camera"

I don't plan on mounting my mirror on the license plate.

It's what Jp7 had that he included, so if Jp7 uses it, it must be good, right??

 

Just a teensy update, I stuck the new mirror on for giggles. nothing is wired but I should be able to just plug AND play. All at the same time.

I can't seem to slide the new mirror ALLLL the way down. I feel like it needs to come down some more to snap into place and make it nice and tight. Right now it will wiggle a little if I pull on it. any tips?

 

Are you using the windshield mount from the new F-150 mirror or your original?

Make sure they are compatible. Otherwise you may need the same mount as the new one. Be careful and don't force it. Take a look at a 2010 F-150 that has the mirror and see if they are the same or check with a knowlegeable Ford Parts man.

 

They have the same part number it looks like. Looked up both a 2006 ford ranger and a 2010 F150, both show the part as being 17698. They come in a pack of 10 for $200.... so let's not lose them!

 

Well I basically quit being a puss and used a teeny hammer to beat it on down. it didn't chip any paint. It's rock solid now.

Yea, those mounts are a bastard. Its easy to get on, but sometimes not so easy to get off.

How are you planning to run the wiring? Under the truck and up through the firewall?

 

something like it. I'm gonna make a new harness i think with some new wires. fo future additions. I also have an OHC I want to install at the same time while im throwing wires around up there.

 

Look into a spool of Trailer wiring harness.
Its 4 wires already put together, and color coded.
Usually cheaper than buying a few different colors. Plus its 14Ga. that's plenty big enough.

 

well I do have plenty of colored wire. Just not all tied up together. well actually i do but way too many strands, like 16.

 

Just get some heat shrink and it will look fine.

 

Or, rubber tape. I used rubber tape on one I installed in my Ranger and it looked factory.
