Moms 03 xploder sport needs rear brakes. has discs, any tips or tricks i should know before tackling them? what is the torque for the caliper and caliper slide bolts?

 

parking brakes is always used and i ordered parts tonight. thanx anyway. still would like some tips or tricks.

I have an '01 Explorer axle under my truck, with discs....

It's by far the easiest set of brakes I've changed. There are two bolts holding the caliper to the bracket...take them off, slide the caliper off, take out the old pads, use a clamp to press the caliper pistons back in and relieve pressure....set new pads in place and re-assemble. Piece 'O' cake.....

However, I think the newer Explorers have independant rear suspension, not a solid axle like mine....

They may be different....knowing Ford, you know.

 

actually i was looking for torque specs. i checked vato zoo but they didnt have anything for them.

but ya new disc brakes are cake. u forgot one important step though, use caliper slide pin lubricant. ;-)

 

Call for ford or an autoparts store, they can look up torque specs.

Use anti-squeel on the pads if you arn't machining the rotors. And make sure you only take one caliper off at a time, if they are both off and you press the piston in, it will push the other piston out.

and make sure you pump up the brakes before you put it in gear lol.

 

well this turned out to be a nightmare.

i was gunna replace the passenger rear rotor and pads because the pads were worn down to metal. they chewed up the rotor. called the ford dealer to see if this was commen and he said sometimes. he explained to me that i should re-lube the caliper slide bolts at the sometimes get rusty and freeze.

so i tore it down tonight and everything was fine and moved smoothly. so my suspistions lead to a sticking caliper pison and noticed the boot was all chewed up and cracked. take off the pads and rotor and the parts i recieved were wrong. so i put it back together and called the dealer. they cant get it in until the 13th of july and no loaner cars until then. so tomorrow were taking it up and let them deal with it. good for nothing Advanced Auto ****ed up on the parts yet again. after seeing the wrong parts i didnt wanna mess with it and wait. plus its still under warrenty and if the caliper piston did malfunction it'll be covered. not to mention advanced didnt have a caliper for that side, the rotor was the right PN but was different and the counter guy gave me the wrong pads even after i said they werent the ones (i looked at the screen when he went to get em). so i gotta take all the parts back, drive the "gutless wonder" to the dealer and hope they can find a rental car for us. this outta be interesting. not to mention we gotta drive some piece of **** rental car for 2 weeks while the X sits if it is covered under warrenty.
