For Sale: BAMAchips Xcalibrator 2 Tuner (Arizona)
#27
Thread's gonna get moved to classifieds....
Last I checked it was $200 to unlock a locked tuner...it's gotta go back to superchips/SCT. Tunes through Rogue is $100 for 3 tunes through email, and $15 for the vin change. Xcal2, if you can still get 'em, goes for about $385 brand new with 3 tunes.
If the truck wasn't put back to stock before saying goodbye, the tuner is locked. This would be called an "eBay special" according to Fred at Rogue Performance.

i was going through this recently and there is no way to avoid having it sent to sct and sct only to get unlocked for atleast 150 if not more, than need to get it re-tuned and all that jazz, if its still set to a truck its almost useless cause your going to spend more than just buying a brand new one.......

I've been looking for a used x-cal 2 and have found an unlocked one locally. And I own a SCT tuning license as well and am familiar with the process.
Here are the facts...
1) If they didn't flash the x-cal back to stock.. it's "locked". That means the buyer will spend $180-ish to have it unlocked and cover shipping. ($150 = unlock from SCT)
2) A new X3 costs $379 which includes 3 custom tunes for your vehicle at
LaSota Racing
3) $180-ish to unlock a used unit + $50 for at least one tune = $230 NOT INCLUDING THE COST OF A USED (locked) X-CAL 2!!!
4) There is a limit on how many locks and unlocks a x-cal can take. (it's either 5-6 times)
My conclusions:
A) Never buy a locked x-cal for more than $50.
B) Never buy one from anyone but the original owner
C) Verify on the spot that it's unlocked before paying. Or.. pay no more than $50 online before verifying it's unlocked
D) Using $379 (+ tax) as a "max cost" for a BRAND NEW tuner.. I'd knock off $100 before even considering buying a used one. So that puts a buyer of a used one at $280 total cost. IMO this is the breakover point at which I'd give up and just go buy a new one with three custom tunes.. or go find a used one at a lower cost.
Me personally.. I'm in the process of buying a locally owned, used, one owner, unlocked X-cal 2 for $175. AND.. it's going to cost me $100 to activate my license for it. So in order to get me up and tuning my 2006 Merc Milan I'll be spending $275 total. See guys.. even owning my own license is not cheap!
Just some reality checks for you guys...

How can I find out if it is locked? Do I need to find a ranger? Anyone local here that can help me out
I've plugged it into my laptop for power and it still shows the 3 tunes on the device.
