Buggman's 06+ Fender Badge LED Plate Mod (ky)

What the heck is this you ask?!

Well, I've seen a few "luxury" vehicles around with these little lights on the fenders that blink with the turn signals & I've seen a few people add led strips to their side mirrors or add the thunderbolt mirrors to add turn signal functions & it got me thinking... why can't I make something cool that's specifically made for us Ranger guys?!?!?

So, I did.

After several months of planning, testing, re-designing & cursing, I came up with a design that I think will work pretty well.

PICS BELOW

If you're familiar with my "Lord of the LED Ford Oval Rings" you'll know what I'm talking about.

As far as I know, all the 06+ style fender badges; plain, xlt, etc. are the same dimension so it shouldn't matter which style you have.

These will ONLY work for the 06+ style badges like these:

What is it & what does it do you ask? It's a 1/4" (+/-) thick plate that mounts between your fender badge & the truck. It connects to your turn signal wiring and it blinks with your turn signals. The entire area around your fender badges will illuminate 360* with light when your turn signals blink.

Each kit will include 2 (two) led plates & 2 (two) power supplies along with quick connectors to make the install easy.

Each plate is designed to fit perfectly behind the 06+ style fender badge with no overlap (although I'm already working on a design with a small overlap, but that's for another day). The plates will come with heavy duty outdoor foam double sided adhesive applied to BOTH sides.

You will need to carefully remove your old badges & clean off any remaining tape residue from the back of the badges as well as from the truck before installing them.
Carefully align the led plate behind your fender badge & peel the protective layer from the foam tape, gently press the badge onto the led plate making sure all the edges remain flush. Once installed on the badge, carefully feed the wires through the fender alignment pin holes to inside the engine compartment (away from moving or hot parts) and peel away the protective layer from the foam & gently press onto the fender ensuring proper alignment.
Connect the led plate wiring to the power supply & connect the power supply power & ground wires to your turn signal wiring using the supplied connectors. Check your manuals for proper wire color coding or use a test light/voltmeter to determine Pos & Neg turn signal wires. Once everything is connected, carefully tie all the wiring out of the way & secure the power supply to a secure location. Repeat for the other side.

The wiring from the led plate should easily pass through one of the alignment pin holes already in the fender, although you may need to cut off one of the alignment pins from the badge.

As of now, I'm only making them in YELLOW, as I believe any other color lights on the side of vehicles may be in violation of some state regulations. Check your local codes & regulations if you have any concerns.
I may make them in other colors, but I accept NO responsibility if you get pulled over and/or get a ticket for improper lighting.

Pricing is TBD at this time, but I want to keep them as reasonably priced as possible. They require almost twice as much material as the small led oval rings, twice the number of led's & twice the power supply parts too.
If you have suggestions as to what you'd give for a set, feel free to send me a PM & I'll certainly take it into consideration when I set a price.

Also, for those of us with the Classic Fender badges like these:

I haven't forgot about you... but the way the older badges are designed makes it nearly impossible to make a plate for them. I'm not giving up yet, but I need to do some more testing & prototyping.

ON TO THE PICS!

I don't have an 06 style fender badge, so I had to make my own using some 1/4" thick plywood. :o But I think you get the idea...

Here's the basic kit:

Here's a quick VIDEO too:

I should note that the fender badges are NOT included.

Sounds pretty cool after it is all said and done. I'd see if you can make it out of wood though. Last longer. It would be more durable and not Worry about it breaking or getting wet? Cool idea none the less.

here in his post for the mock up he is using plywood. For the kit I'm sure he is not. I was more or less poking fun. A mix up of words and it went to Sh*t. lol

He's ALIVE!

Haven't seen you on in a while.

The first "production" set has your name on 'em already.
I still need to finish up that 3rdBL with the new mod too

lol@ psijoe

I kinda figured your fingers were faster than your brain there.

I borrowed an 06 badge from a forum member a while back to make a pattern from so I would have the exact shape & size needed... I still haven't got a set of badges for myself, so I used what I had in the garage... 1/4" plywood. I am a Certified Redneck Engineer.

I'm not for sure on the newer trucks, but on my 96 my turn signals are also tied into my hazard lights. If the hazards are connected with the turn signals on newer trucks too, these would add a little something extra if you get broke down somewhere too.

BONUS, SMALL UPDATE

I've done a little more work on designing the LED layout & I've been able to add a few more to each plate

While I had the graph paper & pencils out, I worked on V2.0 that will be about 1/8" larger all around than the fender badges. I didn't have time to get one completed, just started but if it works the way I hope, it will be even cooler!

I haven't forgot about all of us with the "Classic" Ranger badges... just focusing on the newer badges right now.

What could THIS be...

I spent the last couple days working on v2.0!

And last but not least... another crappy video

VIDEO CLICKY OR CLICK IMAGE BELOW

As you can tell, I even updated my homemade 06 fender badge

This is my first prototype & so far it came out even better than I hoped for.
It looks almost like neon around the badge!!

It's still in the prototype stages & I'd really like to find an old/used/scratched 06 fender badge to make sure my homemade badge is on the mark... if anyone has one they'd like to donate to the project, I'd be glad to discount a set of either style led badge plates for you.

The v2.0 led plate is about 1/8" larger on all sides so it shouldn't have any issues fitting on the fenders.

Now that I think about it, I think I've seen a few trucks with an 06 fender badge on the tailgate... I could certainly make one of these in RED so you could connect it into your tail lights for a little "rear end" color accent too

I'm also looking for ORANGE led's for those of you who'd prefer a little darker/richer color than the yellow.

Bro that is sick! I'm sure you will get a lot of buyers.

I defiantly think you should make them with different colors. (More buyer potential.) Although I'm not sure how legal that would be in most areas.

P.S. You need to put a relay or something on there and make a video as it's blinking on and off acting more or less like a blinker. ;-)

I'm digging it, but a thought. If you make all new badges why not cut out the ranger and let it illuminate that also? That would truly make it epic!

Does anybody have these badges on their truck? I found these on a truck in a Pick and Pull lot. Thought they looked pretty cool. How should I paint them up?

I've been thinking about something similar for the fender badges & ford ovals.
It's gonna be a while before I can even start working on those mods though, first I've got to design & build a CNC router to make the parts.

One other thing to note, I should be able to make these led plates to fit behind almost anything as long as I have access to the original badge/emblem to make patterns & templates from. The possibilities are limitless... I'm looking at some similar ideas for interior accents too.

Sure could, tailgate oval, grille oval, fender badges, wherever they'd like.

I'm thinking about doing a 4 3/4" wide oval ring in red to put behind the oval on my gull wing tool box for another brake light.
