Dome Light Upgrade - Mustang convertible Rear view

I wanted to add map lights to my truck. Most folks get an Explorer dome or a standard Mustang dome.

I went a different direction with my dome light modification and I'd like to show it to you all. I sourced a used rearview mirror for a Mustang convertible. For lack of a real dome light in the convertibles, they put them on the rearview mirrors...so it has dome and maps all integrated into the mirror.

I followed the How-To instructions for the standard dome light, except i installed the mirror and wired it up perfectly. I like how it illuminates the forward area of the cabin separately. It makes the interior a lot brighter and the map lights really help and are a lot less distracting than those overhead. Above all, I wanted to be a little different and I'm pleased with the result. Super easy, took less than 20 minutes, including wiring.

I've never seen anyone do this, so I figured I'd share it with anyone who is interested. Cheers!

Thanks for the comments. I haven't seen any other car in the Ford lineup with this mirror, only the Mustang convertible. That doesn't mean they didn't have them, it's just I've never seen these in anything but a Mustang convertible. A lot of Mustang coupe owners put these in for extra lighting.

Certain model Explorers and Mountaineers had lights beneath their exterior mirrors (the side view mirrors on the doors). Those were so-called "puddle" lights that lit up the ground near the doors. As far as interior rear-view mirrors, there were a variety used, including some with compass, temp, homelink, or a combination thereof.

HERE'S AN IDEA: Put an overhead console, a standard Mustang Dome light, and then the Convertible Rearview Mirror domelight...holy cow, that cabin would be lit up!!!

I was experimenting with colored lights today and the red lights produce a mean glow on the floor when they're on...you could switch the map lights on and get a killer glow. There are so many options with this and others. It's stunning what a difference it makes having the front of the cabin lit up. I can really see things on the floorboard now where as before there was nothing.

I think this add-on is useful because it's simply yet another map/dome light option for the Ranger.

Here's what we've got pretty much for options:
  • Overhead Console
  • Replace Standard Dome with Map Light Dome (Mustang, Explorer, etc.)
  • Replace rearview mirror with Mustang Convertible Rearview
  • Install Aftermarket LED or other lighting

As far as I'm concerned, the more lights the better and this is such a simple, useful modification.
