center console design picture

its a rough idea/work in progress if i ever do a bucket seat install. not sure how it could be constructed (ideas would be helpful ). the top portion/arm rest area is right about the stock armrest height, and i would come up with a hinged top design similar to the stock, but obviously with more room underneath. my truck is a 5spd so i do have the factory cup holders mounted by the shifter, however, i usually have the ashtray filled with coins in one cup, and stuff in the other and can always benefit from more cup holders. the other 2 openings would be for...stuff...

any input/advice would be much appreciated.

EDIT..it is dimensioned to fit between the shifter with proper clearance, and the rear deck (standard cab) however it may get notched to go all the way back and molded into a sub box of some sort...

how about this

Not quite finished with the drawing, but you get the idea. I'll lose access to my ash tray and cig lighter, but I'll put some 12v recepts in the console somewhere.

thats looking pretty good...tomorrow im going to get some more dimensions (its too chilly out and im just too lazy to go now) and work on getting it around my shifter. then i can also mount my cb there. 12V recepts sound like a good idea too.

Just an idea here but what if you take the gray one and make a drawer in it? The upper section would be a good place for it. The curved surface at the front would be the front of the drawer. I know I hate lifting the cover on my armrest. Sometimes it's a pain to close cause it's so far back.
The probelm I see with having a hinged cover that opens on the side is if someone in the passenger side needs to get in it.
An idea I like with my S-10 was the cup holder inserts. Inserts fit small cups and can be removed for cleaning when the coffee splashes on those sudden stops. Also you can remove it if you have cups with large bottms but of course now your hand and a rag can fit to clean them out.
If you have an MP3 player and an extented cab you could put a drawer in the lower section that opens rearwards since MP3 CDs don't need changing as often. (I get about 20 CDs per MP CD)

Is the one with the blue cushion done on Max3D?

yes it was done in solidworks..im an engineering student so i use it quite a bit. and also the top would have some sort of lid. most likely one to flip straight back, not to the side.

I like the drawer idea..it is something to consider. The cup holders would be made to the same size as the factory ones, yet a little deeper. I have some extra inserts laying around somewhere that I would make to fit. Good idea, and I agree, they are needed sometimes. It is a regular cab, and if I pick up Harmon/Kardon's Drive and Play (if that's the name) there will be a compartment in there to run the wiring and keep my iPod.

Thanks for the input.

Good suggestion with the drawer! I agree it would be a lot better than the lid. Just have some sort of release on it that way it doesn't come fling open. Sounds like a good idea!

Both look like a good work in progress. I think I like the second one better, but would be better with rounded corners.

Mine was done with Rhinoceros 3D. It's not my fav design, but I planned it around the shifters, putting the quicksilvershifter at the best spot to shift while 4-wheelin. I'm going to put some sort of mp3 mount in there somewhere as well as a mount for the sirius reciever. There's not much room to work with as there's only about 6-1/2" between the seats, that's why I built it to come up to the dash and cover the ash tray. I wanted to put a CB in there, but there wasn't room. Maybe I'll go with one that has the controls in the handset and mount it on the side or something.

^^ nice man.. i see that the edges are rounded and you tossed in the Ipod. i'll probably just make some cardboard templates, and redo them about 15 times before it's right, then figure out the exact location of everything i want.

that's my plan also-make cardboard templates and see how it looks. I havent decided to do mine in sheet metal or wood/fiberglass.
