yep. your 96 temp gauge has a resistor on it. swap the temp gauge to the new cluster and it'll be good.

did you put the needle on too far? did you install the gauge the right way? it will attach to the board two different ways, but one way shouldn't work, and the other would be the right way. I've swapped mine between three or four clusters with no problems.

if the temp gauge works in the ranger board, it should work in the ex. they are pretty much the same. i don't have any pics of mine apart. well, none that show the back of the gauges.

can you post some pics of yours?

i found why the 98 cluster did not work its not just the gauge its the board and the wire hardness is differnet too the 98 and newer cluster will not work in a 96 or older i found a 96 cluster and the gauge has a resister on it already put it in and everything work and my check engine light is on just like the ranger cluster so if you want it to work get a explorer cluster for the year ranger you have or do what drppdyllwrngr i just cant get it to work but he was a great help

I don't understand why you can't get one to work in your truck. i didn't do any rewiring. i plugged it in and went to town.

but the delete panel was a pain. had a piece of vinyl cut out with the logo, and it was placed on a piece of clear plexi glass. the plexi then went on a cutout delete panel. little black paint on the backside to keep the light from shining through the area it didnt' need to and that's what i ended up with. the blue was done following the how to on here. blue model paint and blue leds.

if memory serves me right, the 02 wouldn't work as it isn't the same style as ours. but the 99 should work.

ebay. got 100 leds and 100 resistors for about $6. used over 60 of them between the cluster and the hvac panel.

it flips the hanger over. good for about a 2" drop. i think i used 3/8" grade 8 bolts, about an inch long. get some lock washers and nuts. grind off the rivets and flip them over.
